POSITION SUMMARY
The position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a county wastewater facility. The incumbent assures the efficient operation of the wastewater facility to provide environmentally acceptable discharge into county streams and rivers.
Work typically involves standing, walking, and frequent lifting of light objects weighing up to twenty five (25) pounds. Work requires the use of computer equipment, laboratory equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and the ability to distinguish between colors. Work performed in the plant exposes incumbent to contagious and infectious diseases and irritating and toxic chemicals. Use of personal protective equipment will be required in some instances.
The work is performed both indoors and outdoors and includes several different types of setting: an office, laboratory, chemical storeroom, classroom, electrical and mechanical rooms. Some parts of the wastewater plant contain large machinery which are extremely noisy and expose the incumbent to dust, grease and irritating chemicals and require the use of protective masks, headsets, goggles and gloves. Incumbent may be exposed to cold or inclement weather.
Guidelines are state and federal laws and regulations dealing with standards of the treatment of wastewater. Guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require interpretation in application. The incumbent adheres to County and Department policies and procedures
This position has direct supervision over the following wastewater treatment personnel: Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor VII, Wastewater Treatment Specialist IV, Wastewater Treatment Specialist III and Trainees.
NATURE AND SCOPE
The main effect of proficient performance in this position is effective supervision and management of a wastewater treatment facility and staff which results in environmentally acceptable discharge into county lakes and streams.
Guidelines are state and federal laws and regulations dealing with standards for clean water as well as department policies and procedures. Guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require interpretation in application.
Operation of the plants are normally routine, but may be complicated by fluctuations in processing demand as well as equipment breakdowns.
Contacts are typically with department and county personnel, sales people, state and federal environmental personnel, engineers and the general public.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Assist the Manager in managing and supervising the work staff of the wastewater treatment plant.
- Supervises Senior Operators, Lead Operators, Specialist and Trainees; devises schedules, trains employees, assigns tasks and reviews and coordinates work.

- Recorded for every sample location that is required by discharge permit.
- Provides information essential for the management of the wastewater facility; maintains appropriate records and reports.
- Performs and supervises maintenance and repair of equipment at their facility.
- Monitors plant operations making necessary adjustments to maintain compliance with State and Federal regulations.
- Responsible for ordering chemicals; keeping adequate stock of all laboratory reagents/chemicals, testing supplies and PPE for all Staff.
- Ability to work hours outside the 8am-5pm schedule, which include; weekend & holidays as well as responding to 24 hour emergency calls.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of effective supervisory practices and principles.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Knowledge of biology and chemistry.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding waste water treatment and purification standards.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair.
- Skill in oral and written communications.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school graduation.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions, to be able to answer questions, resolve problems, and coordinate staff. Five to seven years of direct wastewater treatment and supervisory experience is desired.
Possession of Georgia Class II Wastewater License. A Georgia Wastewater Class I is required within two years of employment.
Possession of valid Georgia driver’s license.
A combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
Salary : $1,440 - $70,179
