Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Welder II to join our growing team in Idaho Falls, ID. This position is responsible for precision stainless steel fabrication and welding and requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering plans. The Welder II must be able to work independently, determining the correct weld sequence to minimize or eliminate warpage due to heat input.
This role involveslayout, cutting, fitting, prepping, tacking, and welding components to meet project specifications using approved weld procedures. The Welder II ensures that completed components safely meet or exceed drawing configurations and tolerances, maintaining Columbia Energys commitment to quality and technical excellence.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform welding in accordance with a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
- Weld precision parts and components per welding symbols, Project Travelers, engineering drawings, and work orders.
- Follow all safety protocols and company policies.
- Use knowledge of materials to select the appropriate WPS, filler metals, and gases.
- Determine the correct weld sequence to minimize warpage.
- Fabricate weld fixtures when needed.
- Successfully certify in two or more welding processes, such as FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and SMAW, including pre- and post-weld heating operations where applicable.
- Assemble mechanical equipment, structural components, and piping systems.
- Conduct self-verification of welded parts before formal inspection.
- Interface with QA/QC personnel.
- Report unsafe conditions and equipment.
- Measure workpieces to ensure accuracy per requirements.
- Remove burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpieces.
- Maintain proper documentation, including weld records, throughout project completion.
- Keep a clean and organized work area.
Required Qualifications
- 3 years of welding experience with documented qualifications OR 1 years of experience combined with an Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology (or equivalent).
- Ability to pass a Columbia Energy weld test.
- Safe operation of tools, machinery, and vehicles.
- Strong comprehension of verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read a tape measure and perform arithmetic calculations for layout and fabrication.
- Must be able to travel to field sites when necessary.
- Must pass an employment record, criminal background check, and drug screening.
- Must have reliable transportation to work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with precision stainless steel fabrication and welding.
- Experience working within NQA-1 or ASME Section VIII programs.
- Experience performing welds subjected to UT and RT testing.
- Ability to weld pipe, sheet metal, and structural steel.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Physical Requirements
- Extended periods of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
- Frequent use of arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs.
- Work at heights, climb ladders, use man lifts, and occasionally work on open structures with appropriate fall protection.
- Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to: hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves, and safety-toed work boots.
- Must be able to work in various environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and damp environments.
