General Summary:
The Shelter Adoption Coordinator ensures a safe, effective and appropriate adoption process for the animals in our care. Assists in providing a safe, fun, and positive environment for the animals and the volunteers. Functions as the first point of communication with potential adopters and foster homes. Learn and apply dog and cat handling, training, and shelter operations information relevant to the job with a high priority on safety.
This is a regular, part-time, 25-30 hours per week position.
Wednesday through Saturday 10 am to 5:30 pm
The candidate must have the ability to have a flexible schedule and respond to the daily needs of the shelter.
Essential Functions:
- Effectively and expediently perform application screening of potential adopters and foster homes.
- Promptly answer all incoming phone calls. Keep voicemail active and messaging updated.
- Works closely with lead tech, social media coordinator, and shelter manager to promote dogs and cats for adoption.
- Manage Petfinder, Petpoint and other animal platforms accurately and effectively.
- Complete foster placement for dogs and cats
- Complete the entire adoption process from files, screening, marketing, animal preview, placement, and follow up.
- Schedule and execute appropriate meet and greets with potential adopters and foster homes.
- Process incoming and outgoing return to owner animals.
- Write and publish accurate animal descriptions including, breed, temperament, behavior, environmental, and health requirements.
- Seek to connect lost dogs with owners and process all return to owner files.
- Maintain a lost dog list.
- Maintain appropriate communication timelines- return Emails, Texts, and Phone messages within 12 hours or same day received.
- Take and arrange payments for adoption, and return to owners.
- Properly manage out of office email replies and coordinate coverage for communication.
- Share safety or dog handling information with prospective adopters and foster homes as appropriate
- Learn/perform a variety of animal care-related activities.
- Be a team player
- Communicate relevant information about the dogs and cats to the Shelter Manager and prospective adopter and foster homes.
- Understand and follow safety policies and procedures with regard to handling animals, cleaning solvents, etc.
- The Shelter Adoption Coordinatormust be outgoing, have a people and animal-loving personality, and have the desire and ability to provide a positive experience for all shelter animals and visitors.
- Excellent attendance, with an ability to report to work as scheduled and on time!
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to interact with impounded dogs including aggressive dogs, bite quarantine dogs, stray, sick or injured.
- Capacity to sit, stand, walk, stoop, twist, bend, crouch, pivot and reach on a regular and sometimes on a frequent basis.
- Be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- May assist staff or volunteers to capture or restrain a strong moving active dog and have the physical ability to do that safely.
- Possible exposure to sick, injured, frightened, or unruly dogs or cats.
- Possible exposure to some to cleaning solvents, dog waste, saliva, wounds, and blood, and loud noise (barking or horns).
- Work is normally performed inside, but outside work is required. Exposure to unpleasant elements, unpleasant odors, noise, bites and scratches.
- Demonstrated skills and ability to safely handle animals including comprehensive knowledge of animal behaviors and confidence and ability to work with potentially dangerous dogs.
- Understands essential safety practices for handling shelter animals.
- Willing to learn and be trained on animal behavior and handling skills
Minimum Education, Training & Experience:
- Have a deep concern for the humane treatment and compassionate care of animals.
- HS Education or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, or reliable transportation
Reports to Shelter Manager and Board of Directors
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
Expected hours: 25 – 30 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Weekends as needed
