The CMH Medical Assistant Internship provides essential support to healthcare professionals by performing administrative and clinical duties while undergoing formal training. This internship serves as an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in patient care, medical office operations, and healthcare procedures under the supervisor of credentialed professionals.
As an intern, you must have an aptitude to learn with desired interest in healthcare, be someone who thrives in a busy, fast-paced environment, have exceptional customer service skills, and be highly organized and detail oriented.
- The internship will take up to six months to complete
- This is a full-time paid internship with benefits
- The final phase of the internship involves taking the national exam to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
- Upon successful completion of the program, you will be eligible to transition into a full-time or part-time Medical Assistant I position within CMH. (With a commitment to work at CMH for one year.)
Below is an outline of the materials that will be covered throughout the internship.
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association
- Build a fundamental understanding of the human body and medical terminology as they apply to medical assisting.
- Define medical terms related to anatomy and physiology.
- Skillfully perform and document routine medical clinical procedures according to the current office protocol.
- Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and other common medical conditions in the medical office.
- Effectively explain exams, diagnostics, therapies and insurance requirements to patients in the workplace.
- Employ legal and ethical standards related to patient confidentiality within the healthcare community environment.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of/Skill/Ability to:
• Must have oral, written, computer and interpersonal communication skills.
• Organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Must be able to handle multiple tasks and exercise independent judgment as needed.
License/Certification
• BLS certificate through American Heart Association within 3 months of date of hire through the American Heart Association (this is part of the internship)
• Must obtain Medical Assistant certification upon completion of program to be eligible to apply for full-time and part-time Medical Assistant I position.
Education and/or Experience
Previous healthcare experience preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance
May be exposed to infection when cleaning contaminated rooms. Work is in a fast-paced, changing environment. Position involves standing, walking, stooping, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds). May be required to sit for extended periods of time. Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; and hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment. Works inside.
Walking and standing much of the time while on duty. Long shifts necessary at times. Occasional lifting and transferring patients. Subject to occasional physical and emotional stress within a fast-paced environment. Pushes/pulls loaded adult stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, crash carts and equipment carts. Transfers patients to/from cars, stretchers, beds, chairs and ambulates as necessary. Tolerates bending, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling for 8 – 12 hours (shift dependent). Lifts or carries up to 50 lbs.
