PURPOSE
The Home School Communicator is responsible for ensuring all children are receiving the proper support to improve their educational experience. This is a full-time position.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Serve as a liaison with parents and the school regarding the needs of their children
- Provide general office support to handle communication issues and data gathering as appropriate
- Promote parental involvement in school and community activities to support their child’s educational needs
- Follow-up on attendance concerns, addresses, disciplines, etc.
- Follow-up with parents on missed Saturday detentions
- Assist in getting needed paperwork if needed (IEP meetings, conferences), etc. for effective communication
- Work with administrative team and teachers to meet school improvement goals
- Be visible throughout building on a daily basis (hallways and classrooms) to provide active supervision before, after and during school
- Proactive in connecting kids to school in positive ways
- Active involvement in creating successful transition programs for students from elementary to middle and senior high school
- Assists with discipline (removing students from class, supervising students in detention when needed) and provide support for PBS
- Attends faculty meetings and pertinent in-service sessions related to discipline, socioeconomic or multicultural issues, etc.) and other learning issues to support school improvement plans
- Make regular home visits and/or contacts to establish and maintain relationships
- Active involvement and support for the MAC Scholars program
- Facilitate student mediations
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Principal

Reports To: Chief Equity Officer, Supervisor of Student & Family Advocacy and Building Principal

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Education; Substitute Certification; Experience working with children in an educational setting.
Preferred: Social Work license and/or administration experience.

Technology: This position requires basic skills in the use of computers and instructional technology; Adhere to all District policies and procedures regarding technology use. These are essential functions of the job.
Physical demands: While performing the duties of this position an employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear; The employee is frequently required to move about and use fingers and controls; The employee is occasionally required to reach, bend, and lift and carry up to ten pounds; Close vision ability to look at a computer screen for long periods of time is required; The employee must be able to regularly travel to businesses, offices, and events throughout the city of Columbia. Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position; Occasional attendance at evening and/or weekend meetings and events is required. These are essential functions of the job.
Environmental conditions: The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; Hold meetings with Columbia business leaders throughout the city in their offices, organization headquarters, and other civic venues as required. These are essential functions of the job.
