PURPOSE
• AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination
This part-time teaching position at Smithton Middle School is responsible for implementing the AVID College Readiness System with fidelity, both in the AVID elective classroom and schoolwide. It is possible that this position could be combined with other teaching responsibilities to create a full-time position.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Columbia Public Schools has partnered with AVID Center since 2013 to implement the AVID College Readiness System. This partnership supports All Learners in Columbia Public Schools. The AVID System comprises four domains: Instruction, Systems, Leadership, and Culture. AVID supports students in the academic middle through the AVID Elective. In addition, all CPS learners benefit from the AVID College Readiness System through highly effective, research-based instructional strategies instructors use throughout our AVID buildings.
AVID Coordinator:
• Serves as a strong advocate, committed to the philosophy of AVID, including support for equity and access for all students to advanced classes
• Provides leadership for the development and maintenance of an active AVID site team
• Acts as the liaison among the site team, principal, and AVID district coordinator
• Acts as the liaison among the principal, AVID counselor, and AVID teachers
• Oversees and is responsible for certification and data collection, including engaging
the members of the site team in the collection of evidence and providing data
• Collaborates with AVID elective teachers, site team, and administration to organize college campus visits and guest speakers for the AVID classrooms
• Collaborates with different school buildings and grade levels to articulate the curriculum and activities of AVID
• Advocates and provides professional learning regarding AVID methodologies for other staff members of the school and the district
AVID System Ambassador
• Build relationships and provide support for all stakeholders
• maintain a global perspective as it relates to district-wide implementation of the AVID Elective and AVID Schoolwide and AVID Districtwide
• Advocates for the AVID College Readiness System in Columbia Public Schools
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite products
• Communicates effectively via email, text, and phone calls
• Models organization of time and materials
• Meets regularly with the AVID District Coordinator

• Assesses the accomplishments of students regularly and provides progress reports as required.
• Evaluate students' learning problems regularly, seeking assistance from District specialists as needed and/or required.
• Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable classroom behavior and procedure rules while maintaining order fairly and appropriately.
• Makes provisions for being available to students, staff, and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
• Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) where applicable.
• Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as needed.
• Understands and adheres to Board policies and procedures.

Reports To: District AVID Coordinator and building principal
Supervises: AVID Tutors working in AVID Elective Classroom
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree; Missouri teaching certificate in any content area.
Preferred: Master's Degree; Prior experience teaching at secondary level preferred. Previous experience with the AVID College Readiness System would be helpful. Prior experience in supervising and evaluation would be helpful.
Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate for the AVID Building Coordinator position is a passionate educator with a strong commitment to equity and college readiness for all students. They should possess a Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) with a valid Missouri teaching certificate and secondary teaching experience. This individual should demonstrate excellence in instructional leadership, with the ability to build relationships across the school community while maintaining a global perspective on AVID implementation. The ideal candidate excels at data collection and analysis, collaborates effectively with diverse stakeholders, and models organizational skills. They should be proficient with both Microsoft and Google productivity tools, communicate effectively across multiple channels, and demonstrate the ability to plan and implement data-driven instruction that meets students' individual needs. Previous experience with the AVID College Readiness System and skills in supervision would be particularly valuable for this half-time position that serves as the vital link between classroom implementation and schoolwide AVID initiatives.
