The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Director of Capital Finance and Reporting reports to the Assistant Vice President of Capital Finance and Procurement as part of the Capital Finance group within Columbia University Facilities and Operations (CUFO). This role oversees the financial reporting and controls for all capital projects. It also manages the five-year rolling capital plan, which encompasses approximately $400M annually in capital construction projects. The Director collaborates with senior administrators to ensure organizational goals are met while driving efficiencies in processes, reporting, and analytics.

Responsibilities

The Director’s responsibilities include:

  • Policy Development and Compliance:
    • Reviewing, creating, and implementing capital policies, procedures, and workflows.
    • Ensuring compliance with University policies and fostering adherence to best practices.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify and implement service improvements.
    • Proposing and implementing operational, procedural, and organizational enhancements.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Leading a team of financial and reporting professionals by assigning work, monitoring productivity, evaluating performance, and supporting professional development.
    • Adjusting workflow and priorities to meet project deadlines and organizational needs.
  • Financial Oversight:
    • Supervising the creation of reports and dashboards to track financial performance, benchmark costs, and maintain key performance indicators.
    • Managing financial reconciliation, project closeout, and reporting for capital projects across all Facilities portfolios.
  • Project and Portfolio Management:
    • Overseeing capital project funding requests and ensuring budgetary alignment.
    • Verifying capital project funding and cash flow projections for Morningside and Manhattanville campuses.
    • Monitoring contingency use for major projects and providing monthly financial summaries to senior leadership.
  • System and Data Integrity:
    • Identifying and implementing improvements to enhance data accuracy and system functionality.
  • Specialized Oversight:
    • Managing the condition assessment database to develop the rolling capital plan for building maintenance.
    • Handling academic and residential insurance claims.
    • Preparing and filing residential major capital improvements with the Division of Housing and Community Renewal.
  • Approval and Governance:
    • Providing final approval for high-value financial transactions, including purchase orders, change orders, invoices, and journal entries.
    • Undertaking additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • At least seven years of financial analysis and reporting experience, managing a capital portfolio of $100M .
  • In addition, must be detail-oriented with strong problem-solving, management and financial skills, and able to deal with a diverse customer base, with the ability to make decisions and effectively resolve conflicts.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and be able to handle multiple projects and changing priorities.
  • Must have sound judgment, with an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation, and must be a strong role model, manager, and coach.
  • In addition, must have a passion for excellent customer service and a commitment to exceptional quality.
