Position Summary
The Planning and Capital Project Management (CPM) group has the primary responsibility for overseeing the planning, design, and construction process for capital projects at the Morningside Campus, the Baker Field Athletic Complex, and Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory Campus of Columbia University. Working in conjunction with all the Columbia University Facilities departments including Construction Business Services and Communication, Finance and Administrations, Operations, Real Estate, and Public Safety, CPM implements approximately $70M to $150M worth of construction projects annually and consists of a staff of approximately 35 planners, architects, engineers, and project managers of varying educational and professional backgrounds including architecture, engineering, and construction management.
Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of the Capital Project Management (CPM) group, the Director of Programs will be required to work closely with the organization's senior staff as well as numerous institutional stakeholders including but not limited to senior administrative and academic officers, faculty, funding clients, end users and various internal administrative and academic organizations.
- The Director will have oversight for select assigned portions of the University's diverse internal client and capital project portfolio, managing and supervising a staff of up to six (6) internal project managers, as well as consultants and contractors to plan, develop and implement capital projects of varying size and complexity from inception through construction and closeout adhering to and consistent with institutional policies and goals.
- Oversee the development and implementation of projects within their assigned portfolio that could range in size from $50,000 up to $250MM from inception to completion and will supervise adherence to budget, schedule, and quality control for all assigned capital projects and communicate with relevant clients, internal and external stakeholders.
- Responsible for coordinating with all internal project stakeholders, external project participants, and clients to manage the successful delivery of the portfolio of projects. The incumbent should have demonstrated a strong background in general project management including, but not limited to, design, construction, scheduling, and financial management. The ideal candidate also will support the development and implementation of improvements to internal administrative, management, communication, and project delivery processes.

- Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of 10 years of related experience.
- Bachelor's degree preferably in architecture.
- NYS Architectural Registration required.
- Candidates seeking consideration must have a minimum of ten (10) years experience in the management of major construction projects, ideally including multiple years managing capital projects in New York City (vacant and occupied) buildings.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Microsoft projects required.
- Excellent time management, interpersonal, communications (written and oral), and problem-solving skills.
- Possess an executive mindset and be highly organized and motivated, capable of effectively prioritizing project-related tasks and goals, and capable of simultaneously managing multiple complex projects at different job sites.
- A demonstrated ability to effectively manage and professionally mentor staff.
- A demonstrated working knowledge of applicable building codes and regulations; building systems (mechanical/electrical/plumbing/envelope); as well as demonstrated proficiency in construction project management and delivery, including the beneficial use of relevant industry tools and software (MS Project, AutoCad, etc).
- The ability to work in a client-facing service environment and exercise discretion and judgment.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Advanced degree and/or supplemental certifications such as LEED AP or Construction Management Certifications.
