The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Director will work in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, they will be part of a high-performing, dynamic team tasked with ensuring a high-quality experience for students in all OSA areas, with a focus on student-centered engagement opportunities. The Director will be a thought partner in creating a bridge for information exchange between the student body and OSA. In addition to innovative approaches, this individual will be able to execute and manage implementation of new initiatives to address student needs. The Director will be responsible for supervising the Student Engagement Coordinator.

Informed by an understanding of concepts related to inclusion, and belonging, the incumbent will manage and accurately respond to student inquiries about student resources, addressing questions or concerns with a solution-based approach.

Responsibilities

Student Affairs: 40%

  • Working closely with DOS, coordinate a consistent and frequent method of communicating support and engagement opportunities- weekly newsletter, emails, Campus Groups postings
  • Develop resource programming for specific student cohorts: programming collaborations within OSA, between Office of Education (OE) units, and across departments (APEx, ISSO, OIE)
  • Primary contact for Delta Omega Honor Society school chapter; including organizing nomination process, planning inductee ceremony, and liaise with national headquarters for payment of fees and certificate issuance
  • Collaborate with the Office of Inclusive Excellence on RISE peer mentor programming, including application process, selection criteria, mentor/mentee matches, and setup in Campus Groups
  • Oversight of OSA inventory of services and website content, promotional materials to align with OSA mission, offerings, and policies, leveraging the existing media tools available and eliminating redundancy of public information (website, printed)
  • Participate, present, and assist with events and projects sponsored by OEM, OSA (i.e., Open Houses, Admitted Students Day, Orientation and Graduation) and as needed- e.g. facilitate student panels, prepare slides for student life content
  • Reporting mid-year and end of year activity to track trends and useful metrics
  • Serve as University delegate for student led events- requires training

Student organizations and student government: 30%

  • Oversight of student organization advising and programming for approximately 25-30 active student groups
  • management of student organization finances and reimbursement- develop tracking spreadsheet/reports; reconciling of business card purchases
  • Ensure consistency across all student groups by managing required documentation, Constitution, Rosters, Event requests processes, and enforcement of policies
  • Responsible for compliance of event approval; determining special events category, preparing materials for CUIMC committee approval, communicating with student leaders when additional information is needed
  • As the person supervising student leaders in their roles, the Director must be prepared to have direct and challenging conversations with students about policies, new processes, and university compliance
  • Onboard new student leaders, develop student leader training- meet compliance requirements
  • Lead contact for redesigning the Graduate Student Association (GSA) (including elections and advising for approximately 15 positions)
  • Supervise and execute the annual orientation student life expo with campus partners and student orgs

Technology: 30%

  • Skilled and adept in the adoption and implementation of technology-related applications that enhance services (e.g., Campus Groups, Mailchimp, Qualtrics, etc.)
  • Ability to design and conduct elections, surveys, applications, reporting, and creating workflows in Campus Groups
  • Oversee and manage access to Campus Groups, develop workflows, ensuring minimal risk of doxing potential- maintain updated student rosters and student group memberships in Campus Groups- working with Enrollment Services on student rosters
  • Ability to use excel or other software to track financial transactions and budgets for student groups/events
  • Familiarity with designing infographics, PowerPoint slides, using Canva to illustrate data and trends

Minimum Qualifications

The successful incumbent will have experience in higher education, preferably with graduate students. The Director must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. The Director will demonstrate the ability to approach projects with innovation and excellence to deliver a quality experience for our students. The individual in this role will be detail-oriented and exhibit excellent judgment and discretion, especially in the challenging current campus climate, while always maintaining confidentiality. Ability to determine when situations need to be escalated and shared with leadership.

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree, plus five (5) years of related experience with supervisory responsibilities
  • Proficiency in meeting time-sensitive deadlines while leading multiple, concurrent projects with minimal supervision is required.
  • Ability to work with and be supportive of team effort is essential.
  • Experience with program design and student life initiatives in a graduate setting
  • Experience in website updating, digital communications, and managing administrative processes, including budgeting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
