Position Summary

The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a Senior Technician to join the clinical research team. Our research combines genomics, clinical research, basic science, and computational strategies to immediately make contributions to our understanding of ALS etiology and pathology. This position would be responsible for several routine and specialized ongoing research activities and will also play a vital role in managing, processing, and performing assays with high value research subject samples. Depending on interest there is also the potential to conduct independent research projects alongside the ongoing studies. This person will work directly with the Sr. Manager of Translational Research and Principal Investigators within the ALS Center.

Responsibilities

The Senior Technician will:

  • Arranging to receive, process, and bank biospecimens. Sample types may include, but are not limited to blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and postmortem brain and spinal cord samples.
  • Performing downstream assays on research samples, including flow cytometry, cell sorting, DNA extraction, genotyping via fragment analysis and Sanger sequencing, and other more specialized experiments.
  • Coordinating with outside vendors to ship processed samples for experiments in accordance with Columbia University and IATA regulations.
  • Managing sample data and coordinating multiple data sources. Including maintaining sample logs, coordinating with and supporting team member’s data analysis requirements, and performing analysis experiments.
  • Performing miscellaneous functions required to maintain smooth operation of the laboratory such as clerical duties, reagent preparation, and inventory control activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree and at least 1.5 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Prior laboratory experience is helpful but may be substituted with experience requiring similar conscientious execution. Complete training will be provided.
  • A working knowledge of experimental methods in cellular and molecular neurobiology.
  • Comfort around human-derived tissues/samples.
  • Proficiency with standard productivity software (Microsoft Office, email, calendars, etc.)
