Position Overview
The Substance Use Disorder Professional is responsible for providing substance use disorder diagnosis and treatment and behavioral health services in a professional, positive, consumer-friendly, and recovery-focused manner. The Substance Use Disorder Professional is a core member of a collaborative care team that includes the patient’s primary care provider; a consulting mental health provider; and other primary care support and care coordination and behavioral health staff. The Substance Use Disorder Professional is also responsible for coordinating referrals to clinically indicated services both within and outside the primary care clinic (e.g., social services, mental health specialty care, inpatient substance abuse treatment, housing, employment, peer support).
Summary of the Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support and closely coordinate substance use disorder treatment with the patient’s primary care provider and treating mental health providers, using warm handoff techniques as appropriate.
- Using evidence-based clinical tracking tools, screen and assess patients for substance abuse disorders by administering ASAM diagnostic assessment for DSM5 diagnoses.
- Provide patient education about substance abuse disorders, co-occurring disorders, and available substance use disorder treatment options.
- Monitor clients for changes in clinical symptoms, substance use, and treatment side effects or complications.
- Support medication-assisted treatment management, focusing on treatment adherence, attention to side effects, and effectiveness of treatment.
- Provide brief individual and /or group behavioral health services with an emphasis on evidence-based services. Facilitate patient engagement and follow-up in behavioral health care.
- Provide or facilitate referrals to clinically indicated services both within and outside the primary care clinic (e.g., social services, mental health specialty care, substance abuse treatment, housing, employment, peer support).
- Document patient services in EHR and track patient follow-up and clinical outcomes using the designated web-based care management tracking system.
- Facilitate treatment plan changes for patients who are not improving as expected in consultation with SUD Clinical Supervisor.
- Complete relapse prevention plans with clients; offer recovery-oriented treatment planning services with special attention to and referral goals and client engagement.
- Participate in regular training and technical assistance activities.
- Provide supervision to SUDP Trainees, as directed by SUD Clinical Supervisor.
- Attend clinical supervision on a weekly basis to ensure compliance with all appropriate regulations regarding Substance Use Disorder clients and to ensure clinical effectiveness.

- Coordinate with referral sources as needed to engage clients.
- Coordinates with Community and CCBHC personnel to ensure effective client care.
- Maintains, records and reports in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Complete all documentation, reporting, and other paperwork per agency standards.
- Attend all appropriate staff, organizational, and external meetings (as assigned).
- Work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to be flexible and manage urgent and crisis situations effectively.
- Ability to motivate staff and develop a working team around individual cases.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have an associate degree in human services or a related field from an approved school per WAC 246-811-030; or
- Successful completion of 90 quarter or 60 semester college credits in courses from an approved school; including at least 45 quarter or 30 semester credits related to the SUD Profession including the following topics:
- (a) Understanding addiction;
- (b) Pharmacological actions of alcohol and other drugs;
- (c) Substance abuse and addiction treatment methods;
- (d) Understanding addiction placement, continuing care, and discharge criteria, including American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria;
- (e) Cultural diversity including people with disabilities and its implication for treatment;
- (f) Chemical dependency clinical evaluation (screening and referral to include comorbidity);
- (g) HIV/AIDS brief risk intervention for the chemically dependent;
- (h) Chemical dependency treatment planning;
- (i) Referral and use of community resources;
- (j) Service coordination (implementing the treatment plan, consulting, continuing assessment and treatment planning);
- (k) Individual counseling;
- (l) Group counseling;
- (m) Chemical dependency counseling for families, couples and significant others;
- (n) Client, family and community education;
- (o) Developmental psychology;
- (p) Psychopathology/abnormal psychology;
- (q) Documentation, to include, screening, intake, assessment, treatment plan, clinical reports, clinical progress notes, discharge summaries, and other client related data;
- (r) Chemical dependency confidentiality;
- (s) Professional and ethical responsibilities;
- (t) Relapse prevention;
- (u) Adolescent chemical dependency assessment and treatment;
- (v) Chemical dependency case management; and
- (w) Chemical dependency rules and regulations.
- 1-2 years’ experience in substance use disorder treatment and services; 4 years preferred
- Substance Use Disorder Professional certification/licensure with the WA Department of Health
- Must have working knowledge of ASAM Patient Placement Criteria as well as DSM 5
- Must be knowledgeable of Washington Administration Codes and the Revised Code of Washington, to ensure compliance with all requirements.
- Able to maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, 42 CFR, 45 CFR, and RCW 70.96A.
- Experience working with clients who have co-occurring mental health, substance abuse, and physical health problems.
- Experience with evidence-based counseling techniques (e.g. MRT, Seeking Safety, 12-Step, etc.)
Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Salary: Starting from $29.53/hr., depending on education and experience.
