Position Description
Columbus Academy seeks a full-time substitute Upper School Art & Ceramics Teacher with responsibilities to begin in March 2025 and ending in June 2025.
The individual selected for this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities:
- Teach nine sections, which meet regularly but not necessarily daily
- Follow best practices and teach students proper safety protocols
- Assume a share of supervisory responsibilities expected of all upper school faculty members
- Collaborate with departmental colleagues on curriculum design and development along with utilizing and showcasing the school’s art gallery
- Provide periodic updates to parents about student progress, via both written reports and in-person conferences
- Work with independent-based portfolio students
- Network with outside vendors and have familiarity with supply ordering processes
- Make use of technological resources, including the school’s online learning management site for classes and integration of iPads and laptops in classroom activities
- Hold students accountable for the school’s standards of behavior
- Work with others in the school community to support each student's emotional well-being
Qualifications
Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fine Arts or closely related field
- At least three years of teaching experience in high school or college
- Ability to teach Art Foundations and multiple levels of Ceramic Sculpture and Wheel Throwing
- Expertise in running a studio, which includes firing a Cone 10 gas kiln and two electric kilns
- Ability to use an outdoor kiln shed with raku and pit firing
- Maintain recipe-based glazes
- Knowledge of clay bodies and the ability to recycle clay with a Peter Pugger Clay Mixer
- Advanced knowledge of both hand-building and wheel techniques
- Knowledge of ceramic history and contemporary artists
- Willingness to collaborate with multiple departments in all grade levels and lead art-based service projects
- Evident enthusiasm for the fine arts
Physical Conditions
Candidates must be able to manage the following conditions:
- Classroom environment
- Mobility around school buildings and on different floors (handicap accessible)
- Repetitive motion (use of a computer keyboard)
- Periodic need to move light furniture, hang visuals in classroom, carry objects (no more than 40 pounds), etc.
- A non-smoking campus
