Under direction, is responsible for performing skilled repairs to the District's diverse fleet of school buses, automobiles, and other automotive equipment maintained by Fleet Services; performs related duties as required.
Two (2) years of experience as a Fleet Services Mechanic I with Columbus City Schools or two (2) years of experience performing major repairs in a commercial fleet or automotive repair shop.
Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes.
By completion of the probationary period must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the following endorsement: Passenger (P).

Because this is a continuous post, exam dates are scheduled when a pre-determined number of applications are approved. Approved applicants will be notified by email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and may include a pre-employment drug test.
The certification process will be the top 10 candidates on the eligible list, or top 25% of the list, whichever is greater, based on overall test score.

- Note, many of our fleet positions are for SECOND SHIFT. Upon an official offer you will begin training on first shift. After completion of training you could be required to transition to second shift.
- Removes and installs engine rings, pistons, rod bearings, head gaskets, cam bearings, and lifters.
- Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles to ensure proper and safe operation.
- Operates computerized diagnostic and analytical equipment to troubleshoot and repair fleet vehicles.
- Measures, inspects, or replaces camshafts, crankshafts, and cylinder walls.
- Inspects, repairs, and replaces brakes, to include hydraulic and air brake systems, anti-lock brakes, and brake components.
- Inspects, adjusts, removes, and replaces parts or components on engines and drivelines.
- Performs work on electrical systems to include installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, replacing alternators and starters, and other related electrical components.
- Performs road tests to locate and identify problems and to check on repair work prior to returning vehicles and equipment to active use.
- Makes road and service calls to retrieve broken down and damaged vehicles and equipment.
- Changes, mounts, dismounts, and balances a variety of tires.
- Diagnoses and repairs anti-lock brake systems in hydraulic and air brake systems.
- Tests electrical systems using devices such as ammeters, voltmeters, diagnostic scanners, gauges, and other measuring devices.
- Drives and operates District vehicles and service truck equipment.
- Repairs and replaces windows and frames.
- Maintains accurate records.
- Maintains cleanliness in work area.
- May rebuild differential assemblies replacing ring gear, pinion gear, bearings, yoke spider gears, and seals.
- May repair other gasoline, diesel, or electric powered equipment and machinery as needed.
