TITLE: Gifted Self-Contained Program Teacher – Special Education
JOB STATUS: Resource Teacher
REPORTS TO: Supervisor, Gifted & Talented & Supervisor, Special Education
DEPARTMENT: Gifted and Talented Office
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide instruction to students who are gifted with cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities
- Adapt curriculum to meet student needs
- Implement a mastery approach to instruction utilizing a variety of grouping and pacing configurations
- Provide high-quality instruction based on best practices to students through inclusion, small group, and individual support in accordance with student Individualized Education Plans
- Collaborate with parents, school personnel, community partners, and colleagues in the gifted department to meet the students’ needs
- Respond and teach appropriately to address the social and emotional needs of gifted students
- Use tiering, flexible grouping, and other differentiation strategies that challenge gifted students with disabilities
- Support teachers in the implementation curriculum models and educational initiatives from the Gifted & Talented Office
- Address the goals in the gifted curriculum framework to support learning in the 21st century
- Collect and analyze formative and summative assessment date for the purpose of planning of instruction
- Maintain a record of student mastery, grades, and other measures of progress
- Plan lessons and activities with other program teachers on a monthly basis
- Work collegially with the staff of the assigned building
- Attend ongoing professional development provided by the Gifted office and a gifted coordinator in order to stay well-versed on skills and techniques
- Attend ongoing professional development provided by the Special Education office in order to stay well-versed on skills and techniques
- Provide support and professional development to classroom teachers on the topic of adapting instruction for students with disabilities
- Consult with teachers in the development of Written Education Plans for gifted students
- Write and update Individualized Education Plans for students with identified disabilities
- Understand the identification process in selecting gifted students and their needs
Other
- Follow the same daily schedule as building staff for assigned levels – arrive and leave at the designated time.
- Serve as a liaison and advocate among gifted students, school personnel, parents and community members
- Attend and participate in school professional learning community/teacher-based teams
- Any other duties assigned by the principal/supervisor
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Ohio teaching certification
- Special Education– Mild to Moderate or Moderate to Intensive Needs (K-12) certification required
- Gifted and Talented K-12 certification or endorsement preferred
- Minimum of 3 years classroom teaching experience
- Skills in relating to parents
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction for gifted students
- Familiarity with higher-level questioning and thinking strategies
