What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cruelty Investigator - Animal Control - G117 position at Columbus Consolidated Government?
This position will be required to conduct investigations when animal abuse, neglect, and/or dogfighting is suspected.
- Investigations include conducting reports, collecting orographs and witness statements, along with interrogating suspects.
- This position will serve in a leadership role for complex animal cruelty and welfare investigations for the division particularly those rising to the level of a felony offense.
- Create and maintain a department filing system.
- Compile, calculate, and maintain department payroll records.
- Investigate reports of suspected animal abuse and neglect.
- Inspect animals and living conditions for signs of abuse or neglect.
- Compile through documentation of findings, collect witness statements, and photograph injuries or living arrangements.
- Interview individuals who care for animals.
- Helping the facilitation of arresting perpetrators of animal cruelty and/or confiscate abused animals.
- Build and maintain relationships with local law enforcement agencies.
- Work closely with a veterinarian in the collection of information through medical examinations/procedures.
- Train Animal Control officers on how to investigate and collect information pertaining to cases in the field.
- Present evidence on individual(s) in a courtroom setting.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. This position requires the employee to be sworn in by the Columbus Police Department, which may involve additional criminal history background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license.
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
