This position performs supervisory, administrative, and technical duties in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and traffic signals.

  • Trains, assigns, supervises, and evaluates personnel.
  • Plans and supervises the repair and maintenance of traffic signal control devices.
  • Supervises the installation, maintenance, and repair of cabinet controllers, conflict monitors, detector systems, support poles, and overhead equipment.
  • Monitors the operation of all coordinated signal systems.
  • Installs and repairs traffic signal equipment; performs preventative maintenance on all traffic control devices and related equipment; maintains records.
  • Supervises and performs on-site layout work; prepares for installation and maintenance of traffic control signs and pavement markings; ensures compliance with work orders.
  • Maintains shop inventory; monitors and order supplies as needed.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment for daily operation, monitors construction work zones to ensure employee and public safety.

  • Performs complex field and bench repairs on electronic, mechanical, and solid-state traffic signal control equipment.
  • Plans and supervises the installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical traffic counters and traffic control signs.
  • Monitors budgeted funds, section goals, and objectives.
  • Operates and interprets readings from oscilloscopes, VOM, VTVM meters, and other diagnostic test equipment.
  • Performs emergency repairs after normal duty hours. Included in on-call rotation for signal system.
  • Maintains files and records; maintains computer logs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices (signs and signals).
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic signal construction and electronic microprocessor equipment repair.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of directing traffic.
  • Knowledge of administrative principles and practices including goal setting and program budget development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of MUTCD – Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in the methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report presentation.
  • Skill in problem solving and decision making.
  • Skill in the supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Manual Dexterity – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Pushing – use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word
  • Talking 2 – shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.

The work is typically performed in an office or in the field. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee must work in the vicinity of moving traffic.
