Job Summary

This is a tenure-track, full-time faculty position in the English Department, where the primary responsibilities are teaching 15 contact hours per semester, service, and professional development, with overload and summer contracts available. Faculty move through the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor; they are also represented by CSEA, the Columbus State faculty Union.

The English Department is a large academic unit that focuses primarily on the teaching of composition, with offerings in creative writing, literature, and developmental reading and writing. Columbus State is an open enrollment, community college located in downtown Columbus. The College serves a wide body of students from different backgrounds and has a large dual enrollment population. Faculty are required to be residents of Ohio and base themselves on campus.

This position will be focused on first-year composition instruction and the successful candidate will be engaged with emerging trends in the field. The Department seeks a leader with an innovative approach to student success in the first-year college classroom.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instruction & Student Learning

  • Teaches courses in line with Department policies
  • Creates a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and support for learners.
  • Uses technology to assist in communication with students.
  • Maintains posted office hours in accordance with departmental and policies of the college.
  • Encourages a sense of community among students for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Advises potential or current students within the discipline about the program, career, or transfer options available to assist with degree completion.
  • Refers students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.

Student Engagement & Advisement

  • Engages in best practices in the discipline by working with the maintenance of instructional materials and laboratory facilities
  • Works with colleagues to develop course syllabi and materials
  • Participates in curriculum design and revision, as needed
  • Shares best practices with colleagues in formal or informal settings.
  • Participates in instructional, departmental, or institutional research to improve educational effectiveness.
  • Evaluates teaching and assessment practices to continue improving them.
  • Participates in service activities at various levels
  • Provides feedback, as appropriate, regarding the general operations of the department, division, and the College.
  • Participates, as appropriate, in the interviewing, selection, and orientation process of department faculty and staff.

Continuous Improvement

  • Engages in best practices in the discipline by working with the maintenance of instructional materials and laboratory facilities
  • Works with colleagues to develop course syllabi and materials

  • Participates, as appropriate, in the interviewing, selection, and orientation process of department faculty and staff.
  • Attends faculty meetings as called by the President, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean or Department Chairperson; and participates, as appropriate, on departmental and divisional committees.

  • Seeks leadership opportunities to share knowledge with colleagues
  • Maintains required professional credentials, licensing, and continuing education hours as disciplinary standards dictate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in English or MFA in Creative Writing

PLUS EITHER

  • At least one year of college English teaching experience, including at least on course in English Composition OR completion of at least one 3-credit graduate-level course in composition/rhetoric.

OR

  • Master's Degree, plus 18 semester credit hours of graduate-level English courses, 9 of which are in composition/rhetoric.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition. Experience teaching Dual Enrollment and Co-Requisite/ALP.

  • Applicants must be willing to work with high school students and teachers to fulfill the college's commitment to College Credit Plus which may require travel to central Ohio schools. College Credit Plus (CCP) is Ohio's dual enrollment program that provides students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking courses from Ohio colleges or universities. The purpose of this program is to enhance student career readiness and post-secondary success while providing a wide variety of options to college-ready students, at no or limited costs to students and families. Columbus State is fully committed to supporting College Credit Plus and invites candidates with an interest in this initiative to apply. Depending on operational needs, faculty may be required to teach in College Credit Plus (CCP) programs.
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's license or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

Salary Details

  • 9 Month Instructor Salary - $49,560 - $55,507.20

Optional Summer Semester (Full Load): $16,034.12 - $17.958.21

Optional Overload (maximum amount shown):

  • Autumn Semester (12 contact hours): $11,520
  • Spring Semester (12 contact hours) $11,520
  • Summer Semester (9 contact hours) $8,640
