Job Summary

The Cougar Success Academy Resident Assistant (RA) is a key paraprofessional staff member responsible for supporting incoming first-year students during the summer program. The RA plays a crucial role in fostering a positive and supportive community, promoting academic success, and providing leadership and resources to students.

Responsibilities

Expectations for RA

Interaction with Students

  • Regular interaction with students.
  • Develop significant relationships with residents.
  • Be available, approachable, and accessible.
  • Follow up on residents' academic and personal success.
  • Use communication platforms like GroupMe or Discord.

Providing Leadership for Community Development

  • Fulfill programming requirements and be visible.
  • Educate residents on civility and respect for diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide community programming (e.g., movie nights, game nights).
  • Partner with professional staff and attend every event with students.

Creating a Culture of Academic Success

  • Encourage students to attend events and send reminders.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to academic success.

Additional Responsibilities

Serving as a Resource and Referral Agent

  • Be aware of current student, building, and campus issues.
  • Support students with personal or academic concerns.
  • Facilitate the Roommate Agreement process.
  • Maintain frequent communication with Residence Life staff and respect confidentiality.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a student at Columbus State University.
  • Maintain a GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Live in the residence halls.
  • Good financial and judicial standing.

Proposed Salary

Benefits

  • Housing Waiver: Equivalent to the cost of a private bedroom during the Cougar Success Academy.
  • Meal Plan: Provided during the duration of the Academy.
  • Stipend: $1000 paid at the conclusion of the Cougar Success Academy

Conditions of Employment

Requirements

All selected candidates are required to submit and successfully pass a background investigation to include reference checks and verification of academic credentials (if applicable). Other additional requirements may be required based upon specific position duties:

  • A credit check completed for Positions of Trust and or approved departmental Purchase Card usage;
  • Pre-employment drug testing for positions with high-risk responsibilities.
  • Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive a Columbus State University fleet vehicle or other vehicle designated as a fleet vehicle. A successful drug screening will be required as a condition of employment a randomly thereafter.
  • Applicants for positions of trust may be asked to disclose criminal record history during the initial screening process and prior to a conditional offer of employment. *

For Faculty Hires: Final candidates will be required to provide proof of completed academic degree(s) as well as post-secondary coursework in the form of original transcript(s). Those candidates trained by a foreign institution will also be required to provide an educational/credential evaluation.
