Overview
The primary objective of this internship is to provide a comprehensive understanding of general animal husbandry in the North American region. Interns will gain hands-on experience in the field while learning the day-to-day responsibilities of a full-time zookeeper.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include assisting full-time keepers with projects, preparing animal diets, cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures and exhibits, observing animals and reporting any behavioral changes, designing and delivering educational programs for the public regarding animal behavior, habitat, and conservation issues, maintaining area grounds and buildings, and performing other assigned duties. Additionally, interns will be required to complete various quizzes, trainings, projects, and a final reflection paper assigned by the department.
Qualifications
- Current second-year college student or recent graduate (within two years) in Zoology, Biology, Wildlife Management, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or related program.
- A minimum 3.0 accumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale is preferred.
- A TB test is required.
- Prior animal care experience is preferred.
- Ability to balance multiple assignments successfully.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be neat in appearance and maintain courteous behavior at all times.
- Ability to work in varied weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain, snow).
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Subject to BMV check.
- Subject to Criminal Background check.
Work Schedule
Minimum of 20 hours/week for 12 to 16 weeks.
Estimated Salary Range
$15-$18 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
