Overview

 

The Camp Inclusion Specialist ensures that the Columbus Zoo Summer Camp program provides an exciting, engaging, and fun experience for all learners, while also supporting year round educators and seasonal staff with the integration and development of participants with disablities.

 

Camp begins Monday, June 2nd and runs through Friday, August 8th, 2025. Camp Staff Training is Tuesday, May 27th - Friday May 30th from 8:00-5:00. The camp inclusion specialist positon will be on site from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM on Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Provides ongoing training, support and feedback to all camp staff, volunteers, and supporting staff.
  • Provides direct support to designated and/or identified campers (ages 3 – 16 years old); ensuring a safe, fun, and appropriate learning environment.
  • Communicates with camper’s parent/guardian about their camper’s involvement in camp, camp staff on best practices and problem solving, and Education Management team on organizational support for camp staff and camper families.
  • Coordinates and communicates with any camper aides provided by the family and accompanying campers.
  • Assists with the development and modification of camp content to be inclusionary for diverse learners.
  • Camp Inclusion Specialists may also work within a camp to facilitate camp activities and engage campers in distinctive educational experiences.
  • Assists with any other assigned tasks as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Two years of undergrad completion in Education, Special Education, or related field required; degree preferred
  • A minimum of one year of professional experience working with children, particularly those with a disability.
  • Individual should understand and respect campers, recognize that learning is a process and not a product, is committed to positive behavior management, and makes the learning process engaging, fun, and driven by the individual camper.
  • Able to balance multiple assignments successfully.
  • Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. extreme heat, rain).
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Able and willing to rotate time within and outside of assigned region.
  • Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance (see uniform guidelines in the employee handbook).
  • Able to work flexible schedule including evenings and holidays.
  • Subject to Drug Free Workplace Policy.

  • Subject to Criminal Background Check.
