What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Care Specialist for Large Herd Management position at Columbus Zoo Family of Parks?

Our Preceptorship Program offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the management and veterinary care of large herds on expansive pastures alongside conservation medicine.
Program Overview
The preceptorship program runs for 4-8 weeks with participants engaging with various hoof stock species, mid-sized carnivores, and other species. Working closely with our experienced veterinary staff (ACZM Diplomate, Veterinary Resident, and 2 RVT) and animal management staff, students will develop their clinical skills, including chemical restraint, drug calculations and administration, medical records, post mortem examinations, and remote drug delivery systems.
Research Opportunities
Participants will have the chance to participate in current research projects with prior approval, work on independent projects on a case-by-case basis, and present an oral presentation before completing the preceptorship.
Requirements
- Final year veterinary students currently enrolled in an AVMA-COE accredited program.
- Knowledge of exotic animals and their medicine.
- Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm and up to 60 hours/week.
- Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures, including required safety and biosecurity protocols.
- Proof of medical insurance and driving insurance.
- Proof of negative tuberculosis screening and current protective rabies titer or proof of recent booster prior to placement.
- Ability to adhere to The Wilds drug-free workplace policy.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check.
