Position Title: Medical Assistant/Translator
Department: Colusa Indian Health Clinic
Reports to: Physician, Physician Assistant
Classification: Non-Exempt
Position Status: Regular, Full Time
POSITION SUMMARY
Provides technical, supportive care and services to patients according to the instructions of the treating Physician and the Clinic’s policies and procedures.
The incumbent is expected to work in accordance with the mission, purpose, and values of the Colusa Indian Community Council.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs medical interpretation/translation for patients and their families, including in-group setting, such as family conferences;
- Make notations in the patient's chart indicating the origin of the request for interpretation or translation, the nature of the service provided (such as interpreting treatment orders or pharmacy instructions), and an assessment of the patient's understanding and level of acceptance of the information;
- Translates correspondence, medical histories, medical consent forms, medical procedures and instructions, legal documents, manuals, brochures and other pertinent documents as necessary;
- Prepare patients for medical exam taking vital signs and symptom history;
- Observe and document patients’ physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs and response to care plan. Considers diagnosis, age, sex, language ability, care setting and desire for care;
- Assist physician with planning and communicating with other professionals involved in the patient’s care;
- Provide competent support services including specimen collections, CLIA waived tests, blood draws, immunizations, etc. as directed by the treating physician;
- Incumbent is required to act as a translator for the medical provider when needed;
- Document services provided in medical record and complete required billing/reporting systems;
- Provide patient and family members with educational materials as directed by physician;
- Maintain medical records according to policy/procedure and regulatory standards; laboratory and referral logs as per protocols; medication sample and immunization logs daily; clinical supplies necessary for the delivery of identified scope of care in the clinic;
- Perform scheduled clinic QA audits as assigned;
- Cross trains to perform medical receptionist duties;
- Assist Management Team with development of operational policies and procedures;
- Collaborate with all coworkers in performing duties required to provide patient-focused services that meet all regulatory and licensing standards;
- Update each patient’s chart, to include medication, update, allergy and preventative care: lab work, last well women exam, mammogram, colonoscopy, etc.;
- Maintain high confidentiality standards at all times. Is required to sign a confidentiality statement upon acceptance of employment;
- Will be required to float to other clinic locations to cover vacation and sick calls;
- May perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience: Six (6) months of experience working in similar setting;
- Licensing:
- Medical Assistant certification from an accredited school;
- Current CPR/First Aid Certificate
- Language: Bi-lingual in Spanish

- Dedicated hard worker with ability to report to work on a daily basis.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time at a computer and/or telephone;
- Ability to assist patients weighing up to two-hundred (200) pounds with getting up and down from exam tables;
- Able to walk and stand at least 50% of the shift;
- Good manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity;

- Work is performed in an office setting which is well-lit, ventilated, and temperature controlled. The noise level is usually low to moderate.
- The incumbent routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
