What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Counseling and Student Support position at Comal ISD?
Primary Purpose:
Support the mission, vision and strategic goals of Comal ISD by providing leadership and management in administering, monitoring, and coordinating a safe and supportive school environment through the development of counseling, student support, and child welfare services.
Education / Certification:
- Valid Texas School Counselor certification.
- Valid Texas Mid-management or other appropriate Texas certificate preferred or experience as a Coordinator.
- Master’s degree in educational administration or content area preferred.
- Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) preferred
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Knowledge of best practices in school mental health, and substance abuse services.
- Ability to provide crisis counseling services to students and staff.
- Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development.
- Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state programs law.
- Ability to develop and implement departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to manage budget and personnel.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to collaborate with others.
- Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff.
Experience / Other Requirements:
- Three (3) years of experience in school counseling, school mental health and/or behavior management services.
- Experience in the development and presentation of continuing education for staff.
- Personal cell phone is required to handle district related business, including before and after hours, weekends, or when away from the office on district business.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide leadership and coordination of Counseling and Student Support programs district-wide.
- Implement trauma-informed practices in the school environment.
- Oversee the development of a guidance curriculum that enables school counselors to deliver structured group lessons effectively and in accordance with students’ developmental needs.
- Coordinates school, home, and community resources to enable students, parents, and others to be referred to special programs and services as needed.
- Provide assistance and/or support as needed to students, parents, and community members of CISD.
- Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy to maintain systemic processes and practices related to departmental programs.
- Liaison with staff in areas of overlapping responsibility such as advanced academics, 504, special education, safety and security, health services, etc.
- Coordinate with the district Safety and Security department on adherence to training needs to meet district and state requirements.
- Serve as a resource to campus administrators, teachers, parents, students, and community agencies.
- Conduct meetings with District and campus leaders for the purpose of feedback, input and recommendation.
- Work cooperatively with other districts, county offices and community agencies in providing for the needs of students.
- Represent the District at city, regional, and state meetings, committees, and conferences.
- Attendance at district wide events, which may include events after hours and on weekends.
- Participate in annual strategic planning and program evaluation to promote, plan and implement on-going job-embedded campus-based staff development.
- Develop and administer the department budgets and ensure that programs are cost effective and managed prudently.
- Assist campus administrators in hiring and evaluating school counselors and student support specialists.
- Participate in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of personnel and make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
- Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance, and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
- Keeps supervisor informed concerning opportunities, needs, and operation of schools as relates to counseling and student support requirements.
- Demonstrate integrity and ethics.
- Performs other duties and accepts other responsibilities as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise and evaluate job performance of district counseling and student support staff.
