Job Description

The Committee of Interns and Residents is looking to hire a Negotiations and Grievance Coordinator to join the Strategic Campaigns team. The candidate must be located within 50 miles of a medium or large hub airport. CIR is committed to fully engaging our physician members on hospital worksite and CIR issues. To accomplish this, we need a highly driven and committed individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills who can effectively solve problems.

The Negotiations and Grievance Coordinator will report to the Director of Strategic Campaigns.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide analytical support to CIR’s bargaining tables
  • Understand health system operations including finance, structure and governance, and how they relate to residents
  • Perform power analysis of hospital employers
  • Negotiate contracts at assigned tables, including as first chair
  • Draft contract language, and craft and navigate effective table strategies
  • Compiling contract costings and perform basic research
  • Understand resident daily work life, structure of training programs, terminology, and role in hospital operations
  • Educate CIR leaders and staff on their findings to ensure strong and well informed table strategies
  • Work closely with the Regional Director and Contract Organizer in developing and implementing comprehensive contract campaigns
  • Communicate and coordinate with CIR’s Directors (e.g., Political, Research, Communications, Regional, etc.) to tie collective bargaining campaigns to strategic initiatives of the Union
  • Communicate with CIR’s Legal Department to ensure that Employers are meeting their legal bargaining obligations, ensure charges are filed when appropriate, and make sure grievances are effectively moved, etc.
  • Develop and train bargaining teams
  • Move grievances beginning at the Step 2 level, including representation of members at grievance hearings
  • Represent members at internal hearings involving adverse actions including but not limited to non-renewal of contracts and disciplinary matters
  • Work with members, CIR staff and hospital management to resolve grievances prior to arbitration
  • Provide appropriate support to the Legal Department for grievances that advance to arbitration
  • Proactively identify needs of the organization and respond with solutions

Requirements and Skills

  • Ability to independently draft complex contract language
  • Understanding and creating resources to advance bargaining tables
  • Ability to analyze employer proposals and work with Union bargaining committee to facilitate strategy discussions, develop responses and counterproposals, and advance bargaining
  • Familiarity with labor law (in all jurisdictions we represent), libel/free speech laws, major laws related to health care industry and collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, mediation and arbitration processes
  • Understanding of the grievance process and advancing grievances towards arbitration
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable in an equitable manner
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to creating a positive and inclusive work environment that encourages personal responsibility, initiative and innovation
  • Strong writing skills for clear and accurate drafting of proposals, agreements, employer correspondence, and leadership and member communications
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple high priority projects with competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships
  • Excellent listening, verbal communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Technologically savvy, including a thorough knowledge of MS Office programs
  • Proficiency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Drive (Docs & Sheets)
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent independent judgment, think strategically and act proactively
  • The ability to thrive and operate in a fast-paced, mission driven environment with quick thinking, energy, humor, flexibility, and above all professionalism
  • Proven ability to work with diverse group of people, from union members to union staff and leaders
  • Ability to critically evaluate one’s own performance, incorporating feedback into improving performance
  • Ability to develop one’s own skills, acquire relevant knowledge and proactively seek opportunities to learn
  • Strong planning and time management skills, ability to develop work plans with minimal supervision, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
  • Ability to facilitate the learning of others
  • Demonstrated interest in the work and the membership

CIR is Looking for Candidates Who Have:

  • Minimum 4-year degree, BA/BS, preferred but not required
  • Minimum five years relevant negotiations/research/organizing experience
  • Strong analytical skills in mathematics and statistics
  • Mastery of arithmetic, basic statistics, and related software such as Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency in contract costing
  • Experience negotiating first contracts preferred
  • Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours including evenings and weekends
  • Willingness to travel and work in different states for determined periods of time as needed

CIR Offers:

Competitive salary ($97,056 – $113,149) commensurate with experience and in compliance with the staff collective bargaining agreement.

Excellent benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage with no employee contributions; generous paid leave time including four weeks’ vacation within the first calendar year of employment, paid holidays, personal days, and sick days; short and long-term disability insurance; 401(k); defined benefit pension plan; and mileage reimbursement.
