What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Organizer, New Mexico position at Common Cause?
We are seeking a proactive and collaborative Senior Organizer to join the Common Cause New Mexico team. This role is critical in growing and diversifying our base of supporters, building partnerships, and driving civic engagement across the state. The Senior Organizer will also play a key role in coordinating grassroots actions, supporting policy advocacy efforts, and coordinating volunteers.
This is a full-time role reporting to the Executive Director and based anywhere in New Mexico with a preference for someone in the I-25 Corridor, with an expectation to travel around the state up to three times per week. We hope our new Senior Organizer will start in May.
Responsibilities
Grow, diversify, and engage supporters
• Draft plans for and implement engaging, nonpartisan education and outreach activities to expand awareness of our work
• Present on behalf of Common Cause at coalition meetings and other events
• Support the planning and facilitation of coalition meetings and events
• Proactively build and maintain relationships with community partners and members
• Collaborate with coalition partners to coordinate grassroots actions and advance campaigns
• Draft compelling communications for state-level campaigns in collaboration with teammates
• Coordinate communications on social media, websites, and email to ensure messaging aligns with our brand and values
• Assist in media relations efforts, including contributing to press materials and supporting media outreach strategies
• Engage members through digital communications (email, social media, etc.)
• Collaborate with other state staff to coordinate and manage projects and tasks within the election protection program
• Recruit, train, coordinate and mentor interns and volunteers to support our work
Support our research, policy and advocacy work
• Support research and advocacy efforts on democracy issues, such as establishing legislative salaries, lengthening legislative sessions in NM, campaign finance, and election protections.
• Monitor legislative developments and identify trends and opportunities on our core issues at the state, county, and municipal levels
• Track bills relevant to our issue areas during legislative session
• Draft and coordinate resources to support public comment and testimony on key legislation
• Execute advocacy and lobbying strategies
Support fundraising and advisory board management
• Support the Executive Director and other staff in fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation, grant support, and reporting for foundations and major donors
• Assist with administrative tasks for the state advisory board, including meeting coordination, logistics, and preparation of materials

- Demonstrated interest in the unique aspects of New Mexico political dynamic
- Knowledge of and strong interest in current statewide democracy issues, including voting rights, redistricting, campaign finance reform, disinformation, ethics, etc.
- Ideally, you can speak Spanish at a conversational level or higher
- Ability to travel 1-2 times per year for team and/or all staff retreats
- Based in New Mexico (ideally, in the I-25 Corridor), with the ability to travel around the state up to three days per week, especially during legislative session and election seasons
- Per our nonpartisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party
- This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining negotiations.
