Common Ground UMC is looking for a proactive, efficient Custodian who possesses an understanding of proper cleaning methods, basic repair skills, and ability to manage building maintenance needs. The Custodian will ensure that all publicly accessible areas of the church are clean and ready for other staff members and the congregation to use. Duties also include maintaining supply inventory, submitting purchase requests, and assisting with preparations for events, such as weddings or funerals. To be a successful Custodian, you should be observant, respectful, motivated, and committed to providing church members, visitors, and staff with a clean, orderly place to worship and congregate. You should also be knowledgeable about proper chemical handling, have experience with proper cleaning techniques, and be able to lift 40lbs. In addition, you should be able to manage overall building maintenance needs and have the administrative skills necessary to work on multiple projects with both staff and trustees.
Hours and Supervision
Hours Needed = 8 hours a week
If extra time is needed, approval must be given first from the supervisor.
Salary/Hourly Wage = $18-$20/hour depending on experience. Position includes up to 3 weeks of excused (unpaid) absences per year.

Job Responsibilities
- Twice a Week Duties:*
o Empty garbage and recycling in the building
- Weekly Duties:
o Vacuum - Fellowship Hall, Narthex, Hallway, Entry, Nursery, Fireside Room,
Classrooms/Meeting Rooms, Offices, Sanctuary, Basement
o Clean - Restrooms, Drinking Fountains, Kitchen Sinks, Kitchen Floor, Entryway Floors, Basement Floor
o Clean chairs and tables in Fellowship Hall (as needed)
- Fill piano humidifier as necessary
o Restock restrooms and kitchen with necessary supplies
o Clean entryways glass, sanctuary door glass, and fellowship hall door glass
- Every Other Week Duties:
o Light dusting as needed
o Purchase cleaning supplies as needed
- Building Maintenance and Management
- Replace bathroom fixture batteries as needed
- Check water softener and load with salt
- Check and replace furnace filters on a schedule and light bulbs as needed
- Ordering salt (in March, trustees can recommend supplier)
- Pest control monitoring & care - mice/ants
- Maintain building electronics/appliances - dishwasher, air conditioner and furnaces (filters), water softener (see above)
- Extra Cleaning as Requested by Staff for Group Building Usage (May require extra hours)*
- Assistance with cleaning rooms in preparation for and clean up after group activities
- Table and chair set up for meetings and groups as needed
- Cleaning protocols must align with best practices of current health guidelines as directed by the church policies
- Coordination with Church Trustees*
- Alert trustees to maintenance concerns
- Window care - alert trustees if windows need repair or replacement
- Assist Trustees in organizing annual spring clean up - both inside and outside
- Assist trustees with maintenance projects such as tree trimming, yearly carpet cleaning, etc.
- Provide assistance to trustees in managing contracts as needed
- Work with trustees on additional building maintenance as needed
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 8 per week
Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
