By joining the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands/Western Branch/West Section II as an Environmental Scientist II in Hopkins County, you will have the opportunity to provide and coordinate assistance to state and federal agencies, local governments, and the general public in the development, interpretation and implementation of environmental protection, environmental mitigation and energy and natural resource policies. You will provide guidance to contractors, keep daily reports on Construction progress and respond to eligible complaints for AML assistance.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.

Holders of the Environmental Scientist II position will complete tasks such as:
- Evaluate Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) sites to assess environmental impacts being caused by said abandoned mine land sites, applicability with environmental laws and regulations, and development of project plans and construction specification.
- Evaluate Bond Forfeited (BF) sites to determine environmental conditions; review existing permit plans, authorizations and certifications to assess achievability of environmental reclamation and remediation strategies and development of project plans and construction.
- Provide technical guidance to state and federal agencies, local governments, and/or the general public in the development of the proposed AML or BF projects.
- Review contractor's reclamation activity to determine fulfillment of project plans and specifications, and construction compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
- Provide assistance in the training of agency staff.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Previous experience using ArcGIS Pro software
- Experience or ability to conduct water and soil sampling, run testing on samples (pH, soil and water, FE, SO4, etc.) and evaluate and interpret data obtained from these tests.
- Physically able to walk several miles over rough ground with dense brush, snakes, and ticks.
