The Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet is seeking to fill our unclassified (non-merit) General Counsel position for the Department of Professional Licensing.
This position serves the boards and agencies that are provided services by the Department of Professional Licensing, but is housed within the Cabinet’s Office of the Secretary.

Candidates Must Possess
- J.D. Degree from ABA-accredited law school
- Admission to Kentucky Bar
- Experience in administrative law practice or related area of law
- Strong oral and written communication skills; proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups
- Attention to detail
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong legal writing skills
- Ability to review documents for accuracy
- Commitment to timely meeting deadlines
- Ability to adapt to work pressures and changing priorities
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Providing general legal advice and recommendations to the Department, Cabinet, agency staff and board members
- Performing legal research and writing on issues related to the Department’s (and the boards it serves) mission, duties and agenda
- Representing the boards, Department and/or Cabinet in administrative and civil proceedings
- Reviewing and drafting responses to Open Records Requests, subpoenas, and agency requests
- Supervising subordinate attorneys
- Routinely works on complex legal problems in which analysis of situations and/or facts require an in- depth evaluation of various factors
- Interpreting and providing legal guidance on statutory and administrative requirements
- Working autonomously and manages work independently;
- Determining methods and procedures on new assignments and coordinating legal projects with Commissioner, Cabinet legal team, boards, and/or subject matter experts
- Providing statutory/regulatory interpretation; review proposed legislation affecting the Department’s (and the boards it serves) mission and daily activities; draft new or review/revise current statutes and regulations as needed
- Performing other duties as assigned by Commissioner or Cabinet legal team
- Experience in administrative proceedings
- Experience with civil litigation
