Key responsibilities:
- Supervises, oversees and assists highway employees in the maintenance and repair of roads, bridges, culverts, guardrails, roadside vegeation, traffic signs, pavement markers, and delineation.
- Maintains records and reports (paper and electronic) on personnel, equipment and supplies.
- Ensures safety of the employees and proper traffic control on jobsites.
- Responds and properly supervises snow and ice removal operations, as well as other emergencies.
- Construction and/or highway maintenance experience is required.
- Computer skills.
- Candiates should have time management and people skills.
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and guidelines.

- This position requires standing, stooping, bending, and lifting 50 pounds. Required to work on State Highway with oncoming traffic to perform roadway repairs. Able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have twelve years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program will substitute for six (6) years of highway related experience in construction or maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Leadership Level 2 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather. Must be able to respond to emergencies 24/7.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
