The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is nationally recognized as a model statewide public defender system with an exceptional training and education program. Our defense teams ensure the criminal justice process is fair, results are just, and individual liberties are protected.
We are hiring a Legal Secretary to assist the criminal defense team in the Frankfort Post-Conviction Branch. DPA looks for individuals who have demonstrated a desire to help the most vulnerable in their communities. The ideal candidate exhibits strong computer and document preparation skills, exceptional planning and organizational skills, is self-directed and is comfortable working with their defense team which includes attorneys, and other office administrative staff. We seek to hire persons who understand it is a privilege to represent our clients and we do so on behalf of the people of Kentucky.
A pleasant, outgoing personality both in-person and on the phone are also highly desirable traits for this position. Knowledge of programs like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, CourtNet, and other court related platforms are a plus.
Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of clerical experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education will substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Clerical experience will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
- Answering incoming calls and maintaining a call log, data entry and processing incoming mail.
- Assisting attorneys and other staff in the preparation and proofreading of legal documents for filing in court.
- Scheduling phone calls for staff and visits to jails and prisons with clients and corresponding with clients.
- Creating and maintaining both the physical and electronic file within the organization’s filing system.
- Assisting with other clerical tasks.
