The Public Safety Telecommunicator is a highly skilled team member, providing a vital link between the state Troopers and the information they need to be effective and efficient in their daily operations. Often called the "nerve center" of police operations they are the initial first responders, taking the call and dispatching emergency personnel including state and local police, fire and ambulatory services. Due to the nature of 24- hour operations the applicant should be willing to work a flexible shift.
Required to be currently certified as a Telecommunicator by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC) and be currently certified as a Law Information Network of Kentucky (LINK)/National Crime Information Center (NCIC) operator. Shall not have been convicted of a felony or other crimes pursuant to KRS 15.540. Required maintain any required licensure(s), certifications(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have three years of experience in the transmission, receiving and relaying of electronic information for law enforcement, emergency medical, fire, emergency management, military communications, or traffic operations.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: College will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be currently certified as a telecommunicator by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC). Must provide documentation of successful certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher within sixty days of employment in this job classification. Must provide documentation of successful certification as a LINK/NCIC operator within thirty days of employment in this job classification. Operator shall not have been convicted of a felony or other crimes pursuant to KRS 15.540. Must maintain any required licensure (s), certification (s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions
Work is performed in a communications center at a Kentucky State Police Post and under extremely stressful conditions. May be required to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays

Key Responsibilities
- Answer radio and telephone calls (including 911 in designated areas)
- Gather and relay pertinent information from each communication, dispatching calls to police and other emergency management personnel
- Provide pre-arrival instructions during medical emergencies.
- Operate the Computer Aided Dispatching system (CAD)
- Familiarity with Post region
- Utilize law enforcement systems nationwide to assist troopers and detectives with investigations ranging from traffic enforcement to major crime.
- Train entry level telecommunicators on radio room policies and procedures.
- Ensure stolen and lost property, missing and wanted persons, and domestic violence records are accurate in the National Crime Information Center system.
