THE POSITION

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Soldiers' and Sailors' Home is seeking a compassionate Therapeutic Activities Aide who is outgoing and motivated to enhance the lives of the men and women who served for our great country. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Therapeutic Activities Aide, you will conduct planned activity sessions that help residents achieve their highest level of physical, cognitive, and social abilities. You will plan activities and outings that enhance socialization, interpersonal relationships, and self-esteem; maintain working relationships with veterans service organizations; and instruct residents individually and in group sessions. This role requires the ability to create a safe and cordial atmosphere for residents while observing behaviors in order to provide reports to multi-disciplinary care teams. In addition, you will address transportation and escort needs, maintain an adequate inventory of therapeutic activity supplies, and attend training and educational programs.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch. You will work rotating days, including every other weekend, and rotating holidays.
  • Work hours may be flexed based on operational needs.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Six months of experience as an Aide Trainee (commonwealth title); or
  • Six months of work experience providing care to individuals requiring assistance with daily activities; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Willingness to work in Erie County, Pennsylvania
  • Willingness to work full-time
  • Willingness to work a flex shift position (12:00 PM - 8:30 PM), rotating days and weekends (8 hours/day; 40hours/week)
  • Completion of college coursework in behavioral sciences
  • Experience as a Therapeutic Activity Aide in a Commonwealth facility
  • Experience in the field of physical, recreational, or occupational therapy
  • Experience leading community activities or events (i.e., church groups, coaching, team sports, music, arts and craft)
  • Experience working in a long-term care facility

Legal Requirements:
  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
    • Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.
