As a Domestic Animal Health Inspector, your role would be situated within the Bureau of Horse Racing, operating under the guidance of the Veterinarian Medical Field Officer (VMFO). In this capacity, you would engage in collaborative efforts with both Commission and Federal veterinarians, as well as various stakeholders, to ensure adherence to the established Commission Rules and Regulations. Your responsibilities would include assisting the VMFO in the collection of blood samples from horses for Pre-Race and Post-Race Testing, along with managing all related administrative tasks necessary for submitting these samples to the laboratory. This process entails preparing the samples by spinning them down before packaging them for shipment.
 
 In the case of a domestic animal health emergency, you would be tasked with supporting the Bureau of Animal Health by performing critical functions such as collecting samples for diagnostic analysis, conducting inspections, and fulfilling compliance obligations. Your work would also focus on promoting standards aimed at eradicating diseases that affect economically significant domestic animals. This role requires direct interaction with animals, which may involve the application of physical and chemical restraints, as well as the collection of tissue specimens for laboratory testing. Additionally, you would inspect facilities where animals are housed, sold, or processed to ensure they meet cleanliness standards, quarantine restrictions, licensing requirements, and other measures for animal disease control. Your evaluations would also extend to assessing animals for potential indemnification related to industry losses stemming from regulatory actions. This position demands a significant degree of independence while fostering cooperation with other state and federal agencies within your designated geographical area. Your work would be subject to review by Veterinarian Medical Field Officers through various means, including conferences, reports, and direct observations of your completed tasks.
 
You may also be required to undertake additional duties as assigned by your supervisor, as deemed necessary.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch. 
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Graduation from an approved Veterinary Medical Technology Training program and two (2) years of experience in the raising or handling of animals used for a variety of commercial purposes including food animals and farm animals; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in Biology, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Poultry Science, or a closely related area with at least 16 credits in animal science; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.


Special Requirement:

  • Possession of a valid class C driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Current certification as a Poultry Technician or the ability to gain certification during the probationary period.


Post-Employment Requirement:

  • This position will require possession of a Commission Employee License once hired.
