The Department of Environmental Protection is on the lookout for a qualified Geoscientist to join their team. This role is pivotal within the realms of hydrogeology and safeguarding public health, particularly in connection with the Safe Drinking Water (SDW) initiative. Candidates for this position should possess the ability to perform visual inspections across challenging landscapes, as well as the skills to read and interpret plans and specifications. Additionally, the successful applicant will be responsible for drafting both technical and administrative documents, making strong communication skills essential for this role.


An individual in this role autonomously carries out a range of hydrogeologic and public health protection responsibilities within the Northeast Region, focusing on the utilization, development, and safeguarding of hydrogeologic features that are essential for the siting, design, construction, and protection of public groundwater sources. This position involves offering expert guidance to field personnel regarding the execution of enforcement actions, which includes conducting thorough research on case files, preparing necessary documentation, and serving as a witness in enforcement proceedings. Additionally, the employee addresses inquiries related to hydrogeologic data concerning groundwater availability, quantity, quality, as well as the siting, design, and construction of water wells. Furthermore, the individual is tasked with preparing Hydrogeologic Internal Review and Recommendation (IR&R) documents for public water supply permit applications that involve new groundwater sources, providing informed recommendations to the Section Chief and Program Manager under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Geologist.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Wilkes-Barre. 
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $61,947.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Possession of an active Geologist-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and one year of professional experience in geologic work; or
  • One year as a Geoscience Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of professional geology experience, and a bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, geoscience, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering geology, or a closely related field that includes 30 college credits in geologic coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 30 college credits in geologic coursework.


Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
