This position allows you to utilize your experience as you oversee the Pennsylvania Archaeological Site Survey program (PASS). Our goal is to maintain the integrity of archaeological sites and survey information in the SHPO data management system (PA-SHARE) in order to assist the SHPO, other agencies, and the public in evaluating the archaeological resources within the Commonwealth. As the Pennsylvania Archaeological Site Survey Coordinator, you will be responsible for developing, processing, and managing records pertaining to archaeological historic properties. This includes public outreach and the promotion and facilitation of new archaeological surveys and site recordation, research, and evaluation, with the goal of maintaining the integrity of archaeological site and survey information in the SHPO data management system (PA-SHARE). You will have the opportunity to provide information and assistance to citizens and agencies involved in the identification and survey of archaeological resources. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing training and support on recordation techniques of sites, surveys, and projects
  • Developing and providing public information about cultural resources
  • Planning and conducting projects to analyze legacy data
  • Evaluating requests for permits to conduct archaeological investigation on state owned land
  • Designing and producing publication-quality maps and other visual products

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, with the exception of site visits/field work, and one (1) day a month in the office in Harrisburg. Specific days will be determined accord to bureau needs. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two or more years of experience working on an architectural survey, an architectural restoration and preservation project or program, and a bachelor's degree in architectural history, American history, art history or course work in Pennsylvania history; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.


Additional Requirements:

  • This job is headquartered in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. You must be willing and able to work in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, when necessary.
  • You must meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards.
  • You must have completed coursework in Pennsylvania history and/or archaeology.
  • You must possess at least 6 months or more experience in archaeological survey and related field work.
  • You must possess at least 6 months or more experience advising and assisting state and/or federal agencies, organizations, Tribes, and/or individuals with the consideration of archaeological properties.
  • You must possess at least 6 months or more experience working with Geographic Information Systems.
  • You must possess at least 6 months or more of experience using MS Office products and data management systems, preferably PA-SHARE and/or Surveyor/Survey 123.
  • You must possess at least 6 months or more demonstrable experience in the processes of the National Register of Historic Places and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • You must have experience presenting research at conferences and/or to the public on at least one occasion.  
  • You must possess experience with software programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, or ArcGIS.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.


Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Experience working with a team of individuals and independently
  • Experience interpreting and applying National Park Service guidance with regards to the evaluation of archaeological properties for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places
  • Current knowledge of archaeology technologies and understanding of how technology relates to SHPO work
  • Experience working with the public and/or volunteers to conduct research projects or training
  • Experience using technology and software applications to manage historic resource data, workflows, and workload, including Esri HUB and ArcGIS
  • Experience in customer service, public outreach and education
  • Experience or expertise in data management, records management, public communication, project planning or review, archaeological or historic resource recordation and/or evaluation, applying National Register criteria/determining the historical significance of properties, research, writing, teaching, and/or interpretation related to historic preservation, public education and developing training programs and materials, applying the Secretary of the Interior's standards
  • Experience in developing and implementing public outreach programs, conducting preservation education, and public speaking
