DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The Public Utility Enforcement Officer is part of the uniformed PUC Motor Carrier Enforcement Division covering the 67 counties of Pennsylvania. Within this role, you will exercise the authority to stop and inspect all commercial motor vehicles to ensure they are in safe operating condition. This position is responsible for protecting the motoring public by placing unsafe vehicles and drivers out-of-service. On occasion, you will work side-by-side and in conjunction with state and local police with the goal of preventing and reducing the number of injuries and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles. This position requires an extensive working knowledge of pertinent Public Utility statutes and regulations, the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Vehicle Equipment and Inspection Manual, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, and the Hazardous Material Regulations. Additional responsibilities include :
- Conducting investigations of consumer and agency-initiated complaints of motor carriers
- Completing audits as assigned by the division office
- Compiling detailed reports of investigations and inspections including corrective action recommendations
- Providing testimony at Commission hearings, District Justice hearings, and County Common Pleas Court
