- DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Working for the Department of Corrections (DOC) as a Social Worker consists of maintaining contact and communication with a range of DOC and community staff, in order to manage specific services.
Working individually with the inmates is an integral and rewarding component of working as a Social Worker. The assigned Social Worker has a unique opportunity to firsthand see the inmates actively engaging in the change process.
In this position, you will be making decisions regarding what type of services, programs, and treatment the inmates on your caseload require. This includes conducting group or individual counseling as directed for reentry and discharge programming. You will also be responsible for preparing formal written reports concerning an inmates progress and adjustment while at the institution and the staff's overall recommendations to the courts, parole authorities. Other responsibilities include managing complex inmate cases, who at times are served by the mental health system and the correctional setting. You will be making independent decisions to advise, assist and plan for inmates based on understanding systems and how they affect, conflict, and interact with one another in the overall success of the inmates.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week.
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

- REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of experience as a Social Worker 1 or Forensic Social Worker 1 (commonwealth titles) (must have been employed in a commonwealth social worker job title on September 8, 2008, with continuous commonwealth employment); or
- Two years of experience as a Social Worker 1 or a Forensic Social Worker 1 and a bachelor's degree in social work or social welfare; or
- Two years of professional experience providing direct public or private social work services, and a bachelor's degree in social work or social welfare; or
- A master's degree in social work or social welfare.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Special Requirements:
- All employees in the Department of Corrections must obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification within two months of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment in the job.
Other Requirements:
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
