Transportation Construction Inspector

The candidate in this position will prioritize and set up scheduled field audits, performing interim audits of current construction projects and performing final audits of post-construction projects. A Transportation Construction Inspector performs a variety of technical duties in the inspection of materials and workmanship on highway construction projects to ensure all work is completed in conformance with approved construction codes, plans, standards and specifications.  

Key responsibilities:

• Inspect construction operations on roads and bridges as assigned to ensure work is done in accordance with the plans, specifications, and contract's special provisions
• Record personal and contractor work in Engineering and Construction Management System (ECMS), and show computations, as needed, accordingly
• Check work zone traffic control signs and devices to ensure that they are placed and maintained in accordance with the Work Zone Traffic Control Plan and Publication 213
• Analyze the contract plans, specifications, and contract special provisions and explain the contract requirements to contractor personnel and others making inquiry
• Inform Department supervisory or management personnel of issues with contractor personnel and others of decisions taken to resolve an issue or request assistance from Department supervisory or management personnel to resolve an issue
• Perform interim and final audits of construction projects

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time after successfully completing the six-month probationary period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,890.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement: 

• This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
