Job Description:
Mountain Empire Community College, located in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach in the Arts and Sciences Division. Salary is based on the academic preparation (education) and work experience of the applicant and is determined according to the VCCS Adjunct Pay Schedule. Part-time, adjunct Instructors are contracted on a course-by-course basis based on their individual availability. Teaching experience is helpful, but not required. Professional experience, educational endeavors, and appropriate certification, if required, are critical. Our students expect to learn from seasoned professionals who can share their knowledge and relevant experience in the field.

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom, clinical site, or online environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.

Job Duties
  • Teach all courses as assigned for the entire duration of scheduled instruction;
  • Be fully prepared with the course syllabus and instructional plans for each class session following the stated objectives of the course;
  • Enforce academic policies and procedures of the College and the department at all times, and comply with all other institutional rules and regulations pertinent to classroom instruction and general employment;
  • Be available during posted out-of-class hours to students requiring additional assistance;
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of competency-based education and utilize available educational resources for the assessment, improvement of instruction, and the development of teaching materials;
  • Take advantage of in-service training and other opportunities for continued professional development, including attendance at off-campus activities, as feasible and generally staying abreast of developments in the field of instruction;
  • As appropriate or as requested, participate in the program, departmental, divisional, and instructional meetings and other announced activities;
  • Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the program director and department dean in meeting the needs of the program, department, division, and the College.


Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum required qualifications:
  • Demonstrates potential in teaching effectiveness.
  • Master's in the teaching field or Master's with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field. (A minimum requirement for faculty teaching ESL and developmental courses at the instructor level is a baccalaureate degree related to the teaching field.)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in the application and supporting documents.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills;
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to think creatively and put ideas into action;
  • Ability to make presentations to large audiences;
  • Excellent computer skills as evidenced by experience and competence with Microsoft Office products and a learning management system such as Sakai.
  • Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality; and
  • Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college.
  • Must demonstrate ability to deliver coursework electronically in an online environment and can utilize multiple teaching strategies as well as in-person instruction.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the varied backgrounds and experiences of student populations and the ability to create a sense of belonging, support, and engagement that considers and values all students in curriculum development and teaching.
