VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Materials Department. We are seeking qualified candidates with a valid Professional Engineer’s license to fill an Assistant District Materials Engineer vacancy. The Assistant District Materials Engineer assists the District Materials Engineer in carrying out the operations and functions of the Materials Section to include geotechnical investigations, pavement design and analysis, materials testing and monitoring (lab, field and plant), slope stability analysis and monitoring, technical guidance, and assistance and training. They analyze material failures and deficiencies and provide recommendations and solutions.
Required skills for job & position:
• Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to transportation engineering
• Ability to provide technical direction, guidance and training to others
• Knowledge of supervisory and human resources practices and principles to include hiring, discipline, performance management and employee development
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to make presentations and conduct meetings
• Knowledge of construction materials to include materials acceptance, testing procedures, production, installation, quality assurance and quality control
• Knowledge of transportation engineering principles and practices
• Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with producers and contractors
• Skilled in project scheduling and project management
• Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources and leadership techniques
• Knowledge of pavement analysis and design, soil and paving materials testing methods and VDOT materials standards and specifications
• Ability to supervise staff, programs and budgets
• Ability to research and analyze data to provide recommendations and solutions to problems
• Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications to include engineering software
• Knowledge of materials and civil engineering principles and practices related to highway design, construction and maintenance
Minimum Qualifications
• Valid Professional Engineer's license (FE and EIT do not meet this requirement)
• Degree in materials engineering, civil engineering or related field
• Ability to provide technical direction, guidance and training to others
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to include preparation and presentation of technical information
• Ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders including contractors, local government officials, and other VDOT staff
• Knowledge of pavement analysis and design, soil and paving materials test methods and VDOT materials standards and specifications
• Knowledge of materials and civil engineering principles and practices related to highway design, construction and maintenance

• Progressively responsible experience in materials, construction engineering, or pavement design
