Job Duties
The mission of Internal Audit is to provide Executive Management of the Department of Corrections with independent and objective assurance and consulting services that are guided by a philosophy of adding value to improve the operations of the Department (DOC) and to assist the DOC in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the organization’s risk management, control, and governance processes.
To perform professional internal audits by planning and conducting audits of the DOC’s environment. The primary work products are comprehensive audit working papers and final audit reports. Audits performed include operational, compliance, financial, and other audits, to evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of operations and related internal controls within the DOC. Duties may include supervising staff and managing audits or special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Advanced experience in accounting, auditing/assurance services, information systems, or risk management. In-depth knowledge and experience with the audit process. Extensive knowledge and experience of audit standards and practices. Knowledge of IT concepts and principles. Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and DOC compliance issues. Excellent oral and written skills. Skill in using advanced personal computer applications such as spreadsheets, database packages, office automation software, the Internet, and other software required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Experience performing and leading comprehensive, and at times complex, financial, compliance, and operational audits. Ability to utilize the DOC information systems to design and perform audit work. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of management, to include Executive Management, Wardens, Superintendents, Chiefs, and individuals of other Commonwealth and Federal entities. Strong commitment to ethics; self-motivated with a desire to learn and deploy new audit techniques; exhibits professional judgment. Stays current on industry practices; proactive in evaluating and solving problems; motivates and provides direction on audits and projects as appropriate; successfully organizes audits and projects to meet objectives and deadlines; encourages teamwork and cooperation; establishes an effective working relationship with the auditee and enlists their cooperation. Actively maintains continued growth and improvement regarding requirements of the position; continuous emphasis on improving service and value. Excellent communicator capable of creating and communicating clear and concise instructions; anticipates needs of others; develops effective means to convey oral and written thoughts; effectively manages conflict; uses tact when dealing with uncooperative and sensitive individuals.
