Job Duties
VDOTs Construction Materials division is seeking a skilled individual to sample and test materials used for highway construction and maintenance such as asphalt, aggregates, hydraulic cement concrete, and soils in a field setting. The position utilizes standard procedures to sample and test materials used in construction/maintenance projects for quality assurance. Records and analyzes data. Provides guidance to field construction/maintenance staff regarding sampling, testing, and placement methods/procedures for asphalt, soils, and aggregate. Maintains accurate records and prepares technical reports. Works as part of a team to test samples of asphalt concrete, hydraulic cement concrete, aggregates, and soils. Maintains laboratory and field equipment daily. Assists with drilling and core sampling of asphalt, soil and aggregate in the field as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Sufficient experience to perform material testing.
Experience in highway construction and maintenance methods, materials and usage.
Knowledge of materials sampling and testing procedures.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations and prepare test reports.
Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications.
Ability to develop and maintain project documentation for transportation related projects.
Skill in the use of computers, software applications to include MS office.
Ability to analyze data and draw logical conclusions based on analysis.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to work independently and in teams.
Ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, dust, heat, vapors and moisture.
Perform physical activities, such as lifting and standing for long periods of times, in securing and testing samples.
Ability to work around chemicals with respiratory PPE
Valid Driver’s license.
Additional Considerations
National Emulsion Technician Certification
Experience with AASHTO: Resource and accreditation
Ability to hold informative meetings and run subcommittees with industrial professionals.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.
