The UVA Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is seeking a Post Award Accountant to join their team, reporting to the Assistant Director of OSP Post Award Cash Management. The position provides an option to work on-site, hybrid or fully remote, following the University's remote work guidelines. The Post Award Accountant monitors, reconciles, and analyzes expenditures and cash on sponsored awards to ensure compliance with award terms and conditions. The Post Award Accountant identifies payment advice and incoming payments to ensure application to appropriate award.

This position is responsible for award management of sponsored awards from the time the awards are accepted until the end of the research project. The Accountant is responsible for identifying payments to sponsored projects, monitoring unapplied cash, following up on outstanding receivables, processing sponsor refunds, identify expenditure credits and providing audit support. The Post Award Accountant prepares invoices including letter of credit draws and assists in the cash application process. This position is also responsible for ensuring that final expenditure and cash reconciliations are performed in a timely manner so that final invoices or reports can be submitted to the sponsor and awards closed in the financial system. The Accountant will work closely with university partners and sponsors regarding payments and cash reconciliations.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Independently reviews sponsored award terms and conditions, identifies reporting, invoicing and other specific financial requirements, and tracks tasks through the financial system.
  • Reviews payments from various sponsors, applies cash to the appropriate awards and proactively identifies and investigates variances, troubleshoots problems by researching pertinent facts and analyzing data.
  • Understands complex situations regarding non-compliance with sponsor requirements and escalates issues to the Senior Post Award Accountant or to Post Award Management in a timely manner.
  • Prepares invoices (to include clinical trails and letter of credit)
  • Receives training from Post Award leadership and external resources to understand state, federal and non-federal sponsor terms and applies comprehensive knowledge of the industry and professional standards to interpret and resolve post award financial management issues.


Minimum Requirements:
Grants and Contracts Specialist:

Education: Associate's degree.
Experience: At least two years of grant and contract experience in a university, not for profit research organization, or federal agency environment . Two additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.

Grants and Contracts Administrator:

Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: At least three years of grant and contract experience in a university, not for profit research organization, or federal agency environment . Four additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.

Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
