The Opportunity: Security Officer
Assist the Port Police & Security department in maintaining the physical security of the Port of Virginia (POV) terminals and facilities. Support security and safety patrol, scene control activities, and environmental mishaps under the direction of the Virginia Port Authority Police.
What You’ll Do: Responsibilities
- Perform security patrols of terminals and facilities, following established security protocols. Provide a safe and secure working environment for all colleague/patrons.
- Assess, report, and remain vigilant for safety incidents and violations, such as potholes and holes in fences.
- Assist in educating new and current employees on safety and security policies and procedures.
- Respond to general calls for service, such as accessing locked buildings, assisting staff and visitors, and providing escorts.
- Assist police in traffic and scene control. Direct traffic, secure perimeters, and gather information related to incidents. Support police on calls for service, as directed.
- Ensure adherence to all federal maritime transportation security requirements.
- Report, document, and respond to calls regarding environmental incidents, such as hazards and spills.
- Report potentially criminal activities and security incidents. Administer Terminal Security Infractions.
- Assist port credentialing operations as a backup when needed for the port identification and access control system. Issue POV identifications and Transportation Worker Identification (TWIC) cards. Register employees and visitors in the system of record.
- Escort responding emergency vehicles to incident locations.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information related to security/law enforcement operations.
- Monitor and allow appropriate access to buildings and grounds.
- Support terminal operations by assisting with the movement of rail and containers/cargo.
- Have the ability to work any shift assigned in a 24-hour period, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays.
