Position Summary Information
Position Purpose
Provide oversight of students and residential staff during TRIO Upward Bound’s residential Summer Academy.
Description of Duties
- Supervise, schedule, mentor, evaluate, and assist in the orientation of 6 college-aged Residential Mentors employed by the program
- Enforce residence hall and program policies and enact disciplinary measures in consultation with professional staff members
- Ensure the general cleanliness of common areas within the residence hall and report maintenance concerns to Residence Life personnel when necessary
- Establish positive, effective working relationships with all program participants and staff
- Assist Residential Mentors in planning and delivering social, educational, and recreational programming
- Serve as the liaison between the Residential Mentors, professional staff, and classroom teachers
- Assist in planning and delivering training for Residential Mentors during the mandatory training week prior to the start of the Summer Academy
- Provide conflict resolution among students and residential staff when needed
- Oversee the distribution of over-the-counter and prescription medication to students as needed
Decision Making
- Determine appropriate responses to anticipated and unanticipated happenings within the residence hall, in full adherence to University and Upward Bound policies and guidelines.
- Communicate with professional staff when guidance is needed or questions emerge.
Fiscal Responsibility
- Oversee the efficient use of supplies and equipment within the residence hall by students and staff and ensure their successful return to storage when no longer needed
Supervisory Responsibility
- Supervise, schedule, mentor, evaluate, and assist in the orientation of 6 college-aged Residential Mentors employed by the program
- Enforce residence hall and program policies and enact disciplinary measures, consulting with professional staff members when needed
Minimum Requirements Profile
- Earned Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, student affairs, communications, or a related field prior to the start of employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Related experience as a residence hall staff member, tutor, teacher, or camp leader
- Experience working with TRIO programs and/or adolescents from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds
- Strong communication, organizational, and supervisory skills

Background Clearances
Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors. In order to qualify for a provisional appointment, the Applicant Acknowledgement Consent Form, Provisional Hire Form, Pennsylvania State Police and Justifacts portion of the clearance process must be successfully completed prior to your start date. The remaining PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Clearance must be successfully completed and returned as soon as possible within the first 90 days of employment.
