Position Summary :
The Psychiatrist in a long-term care (LTC) setting is responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based mental health care to residents in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). This role involves collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive mental and physical healthcare, coordinating medical services, and playing a key role in developing policies and behavioral health programs. The psychiatrist will provide evidenced based mental health treatment, participate in care planning meetings, and work closely with psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) as well as licensed independent social workers (LISWs). This position plays a pivotal role in enhancing mental health care within the LTC setting, ensuring SNF residents receive the highest standard of psychiatric care and supporting the development of a robust and comprehensive behavioral health program.
Key Responsibilities :
- Deliver direct psychiatric care, including diagnostic evaluations, medication management, and psychotherapy for residents with a range of mental health conditions, focusing on geriatric populations and patients with chronic mental illness.
- Coordinate psychiatric care with medical and nursing staff, ensuring integration of physical and mental healthcare, particularly for complex cases involving comorbidities.
- Actively engage in interdisciplinary behavioral health teams, collaborating with psychiatric NPs, LISWs, psychologists, nurses, and primary care physicians to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
- Participate in creating, updating, and implementing policies and protocols for behavioral health services in alignment with best practices and regulatory requirements. Contribute to the development of comprehensive psychiatric care programs within SNFs.
- Provide emergency psychiatric evaluations and treatment as needed, ensuring swift response to acute mental health crises.
- Offer guidance, mentorship, and education to psychiatric NPs, LISWs, and psychologists, fostering professional development and improving clinical outcomes. Promote a team-based, collaborative care model.
- Ensure care practices comply with CMS, Medicare Advantage, and Special Needs Plan (SNP) regulations, as well as other relevant regulatory standards. Participate in quality assurance activities to maintain high standards of care.
