The bus driver is responsible for the safe transportation of all Head Start persons and students to and from their homes. The bus driver must comply with all State and local regulations, implement Head Start Performance Standards and DCFS regulations. Knows and complies with the rules and regulations of driving a bus safely. Must attend an annual refresher course.

- Maintains a clean bus.
- Completes a bus driver's Pre-trip Inspection Report daily.
- Keeps accurate records - Weekly bus record report forms, gas receipts, attendance forms and white copies of the pre- trip inspection sheets are to be submitted to the central office the first day of the week inside an interoffice bus envelope.
- Reports all accidents and passenger incidents to site director and transportation support specialist.
- Must be documented.
- Checks mileage regularly for scheduling of maintenance. Oil changes will be done every three months or 3,000 miles, brake inspection/wheel pull to be done annually or 10,000 miles, and safety inspections every six months or 10,000 miles, which ever comes first.
- Reports any mechanical malfunctions to the transportation support specialist/family services manager.
- Sets up route scheduling and report problems regarding tardiness or absence to site director.
- Becomes acquainted with all new rules and laws on pupil safety as they pertain to drivers. Maintains safety of children by use of seat restraints at all times. Verifies that children are properly restrained in child safety restraints during loading at center and field trips. Works cooperatively with bus attendant to provide for special needs and guidance/discipline of children.
- Ensures completion of child attendance sheets daily.
- Maintains updated bus route schedules for center and central office within two days of a change.
- Complies with mandated child abuse and neglect reporting requirements.
- Renews CDL and bus driver's permit when required.
- Assists with field trips coordinated with site director.
- Completes annual evaluation for bus attendant.
- Performs other duties as directed by family services manager/executive director.
