JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Dental Assistant
SUPERVISOR: Dental Director

- JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting the dentists and dental hygienist in the direct provision of primary care dental services to dental center patients; also responsible for sterilization, preparation and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies.
- SPECIFIC DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follows CAA policies/procedures, including current HIPAA regulations
- Assists patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering their questions and giving directions to patients as authorized by the dentist or dental hygienist
- Serves as dentist’s or dental hygienist’s chair-side assistant
- Prepares operatory for patient treatment as per CAA protocols and the dentist’s or hygienist’s directions
- Exposes and develops dental radiographs in accordance with state regulations and law as well as CAA’s directives/protocols
- Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by the dentist in accordance with state regulation/law and CAA directive/protocols
- Maintains dental equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s directions and CAA’s policies/protocols
- Maintains all dental center areas in compliance with CAA directives/protocols/policies/procedures relative to infection control, exposure control and safety issues
- Maintains adequate operatory supplies and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes
- Accurately maintains and assists the dentists/hygienist in maintaining patient records, documents, forms and related paperwork
- Receives/places necessary telephone calls consistent with dental center business and to facilitate scheduling
- Assists with various clinical/administrative functions of the center
- Ensures the sterility of all reusable dental instruments and equipment in accordance with CAA directives/protocols
- Ensures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with CAA policy as well as state/federal law
- Travel required for CMEs, trainings, outreach programs, and when necessary to meet operational needs.
- Performs all functions in full compliance with Exposure Control Plan including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions
- Participates in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site as required
- Responsible for all personal compliance in full with applicable federal, state, local and CAA rules, regulations, protocols and procedures
- All other duties as assigned
- REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Completion of accredited course in dental assisting preferred
- Certified dental assistant preferred
- Radiology license preferred
- Current CPR certification
- Biennial continuing education necessary to maintain certification/licensure
- ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 1-2 year(s) of experience in oral health care is preferred
- Effective interpersonal communication skills
- Background check including Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Medicare exclusion list, verification of valid driver’s license, employment medical exam, including a TB test, adherence to all CAA policies/procedures and requirements of all funding sources. CAA is a drug/alcohol-free and smoke-free workplace and post-offer drug and alcohol testing is required.

- Comprehensive knowledge of dental assisting techniques and procedures for all phases of general dentistry
- Demonstrates computer skills
- Knowledge of modern dental materials, their storage, handling and applications
- Ability to accurately carry out orders of dentists and hygienist in a timely manner
- Initiative to understand and carry out tasks necessary to assure good patient care without constant supervision
- 90-day probationary period
- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds
- Prolonged sitting or standing may be required
- Physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with the practice of modern dental assisting on a repetitive basis
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment
- Frequent exposure to chemicals and substances common in an office environment
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and often high-stress environment as well as the ability to adapt quickly to workload changes
- Ability to deal with inside and outside clientele in a diplomatic and courteous manner while assuring adherence to CAA policies/procedures
- Above average oral, reading and writing skills to accurately operate a computer, perform necessary documentation and effectively communicate with staff, patients, clients, customers, business partners, other CAA departments and visitors

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
