Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Harm Reduction Specialist to join our team. This role is essential in providing syringe exchange, overdose prevention, and other harm reduction services to people who use drugs across Long Island.
The required schedule for this position is Thursday - Monday, 10:00am - 6:00pm.
Responsibilities
- Conduct outreach to people who use drugs (PWUD), primarily in public settings, throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties;
- Enroll new participants and provide Special Arrangements syringe transactions (in a variety of locations, including participants’ homes);
- Present and discuss harm reduction information (including overdose prevention, safer injection techniques, and wound care) with participants;
- Provide referrals such as HIV/HCV/STI testing and counseling, substance use treatment programs, insurance, and any other resources they may need, and ensure linkage to those services (may entail coordination with other service providers, facilitation of transportation, etc);
- Conduct outreach and overdose prevention training for businesses and other community organizations
- Participate on the Crisis Mobilization Team to provide intensive naloxone distribution and community support
- Represent CASJ at relevant coalition/task force/community meetings;
- Assist with data entry and reconciliation as needed;
- Provide support for 24-hour phone line as needed; and
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Current NYS driver’s license in good standing and use of personal vehicle required (must provide proof of insurance);
- Work Schedule: Thursday - Monday
- Some evenings and holiday hours required; and
- Respect for people of diverse ethnicities, races, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and socioeconomic conditions required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with and advocating for people who use drugs;
- Knowledge of harm reduction principles and ability to relate to people using drugs respectfully and without judgment;
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, buprenorphine, naloxone, and Hepatitis C highly desirable;
- Strong presentation and interpersonal skills;
- Bilingual (especially Spanish) very desirable;
- Advanced degree in public health, public administration, law, or relevant social science desirable.
Location: Hauppauge, and throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties
Compensation: $45,000 annual salary (f/t), plus benefits (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 403b with employer match)
