Position Overview
The Head Start Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Head Start sites. This position serves as the supervisor to the program Center Manager and ensures the Head Start sites are compliant with all applicable laws and regulations.
The Assistant Head Start Director will assume the responsibilities of the Head Start Director in their absence and will play a key role in maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations, enhancing program quality, and fostering a positive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Administration, Planning and Evaluation
Identify and address staff training needs to, at minimum, meet required standards and licensing requirements
Evaluate by observation each classroom to ensure compliance with Head Start performance standards, licensing requirements, and other accreditation entities
Responsible for ordering equipment and supplies necessary to fulfill needs of each classroom and maintain list of supplies and equipment as required for each Center
Responsible for ensuring all Head Start classrooms are equipped with the proper equipment and supplies to ensure high quality service delivery
Advances staff performance by meeting regularly with individual staff to provide performance feedback based on expectations contained in the job description, program plans and policies and procedures. Ensure monthly center staff meetings are coordinated more frequently as needed
Coordinate and facilitate individual and group meetings regularly and as needed to ensure effective communication of expectations, program plans, policies and procedures
Responsible for the scheduling of substitutes
Serve as the liaison for State of Missouri Child Care Licensure
Facilitate communication between center staff and the Head Start Management Team to ensure program compliance
All other duties as assigned
Quality and Community Relationships
- Maintain good communication with program staff and community/ agency businesses
- Establish and maintains high quality services to program staff and families
Supervision and Staff Relationships
Oversees the activities of the Center Managers; provide recruitment, training, support, and supervisory review.
Conduct performance evaluations and assist in professional development annually.
Cooperate with other staff and program leadership to ensure high quality service provision
Will provided direct mentoring and coaching to staff, as it relates
Participate in and attends staff meetings, and other meetings; as needed
Program/Fiscal Management
Assume the duties of the Head Start Director in their absence, including leading meetings, handling personnel issues, communicating with federal representatives, attending Board or Parent Committee (PC) meetings, and managing timesheets
Attend budget meetings and provide input and feedback
Assist with federal program closeout processes
Support the HS Director working with HR and Accounting staff to regularly assess the program’s financial and legal risks and improve internal controls as necessary
Regularly review and approve requisitions, receipts, and invoices ensuring expenses are allowable under the program contract and in the HS Director’s absence.
Qualifications
Experience with service delivery to families, child development and administration.
Ability to prioritize and self-motivate to complete tasks.
Clear and effective written and spoken communication skills.

Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. at times.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in management, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field with three years’ experience in supervisory or managerial role, two years’ experience in early childhood required;
Master’s degree in Management, Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field with five years’ experience in supervisory or management roles, two years’ experience in early childhood preferred.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
